Anyone else hoping to add a rescue dog to the family in 2023?

I’m registered and approved with two local rescues but they seem to have huge demand at the moment, which is great. I expressed interest in four dogs over the last week but application levels were so high that I didn’t even receive a response and the dogs were marked as “booked” within a few hours. Great that the demand is so high and dogs are being rehomed quickly.

The first “Christmas Day puppy” in one of the rescues was surrendered on December 27th 😡
There also seems to be a lot of pregnant bitches and mothers with newborns being surrendered because the “breeders” don’t have the demand for the pups. Most of these seem to be expensive mixes with fancy names- doodle etc.

We did get to see one pup a few months ago but it just wouldn’t have been a good match. That was with a different rescue and they weren’t entirely truthful about the mix of breeds so we opted not to take that pup as it would likely have been a poor match, unfortunately.

Our situation is that we already have a dog and she just loves other dogs so would love a sister or brother. We don’t have children, live rurally, have a big and very secure garden, both work from home so always have someone around during the day. Very flexible about the age and size of dog we take- our current dog is a large breed so something medium-large would probably make sense, but happy to look at smaller dogs who are a bit more robust and happy to have a giant sister. Would love to take on a former breeding dog to give her a lovely life, but open to puppies also.

Our current dog is quite boisterous but very well socialised and perfectly gentle with smaller dogs, but it’s hard to know how a dog who has had a traumatic life would deal with such an enthusiastic playmate.

Not in any rush- figure there’s a dog out there for us and we’ll hopefully meet them soon.

Is anyone else hoping to adopt this year?

You don't happen to be in the SW? My local rescue has some that might be appropriate. One in particular that is depressed as she has been there a very long time, but is a large lurcher needing a rural home.

Unfortunately not, I’m not even in the UK.

Poor little lurcher- hope he finds a home very soon. There seems to be so many of them in rescues. A rescue near me even states on their sites that 95% of their dogs are lurchers/greyhounds/sighthounds. Such a shame as they’re just a gorgeous dog.

We did this and have a gorgeous lad from Cyprus.
East Midlands dog rescue were great but do only rehome within 25 mile radius from them if you are in this area.

I have my first 2023 foster - pregnant collie dumped outside rescue centre. Not exactly sure when puppies are due but looks pretty soon.

OP good luck in your search I hope you find the perfect match for your family and one very happy rescue dog gets a lovely new home.

Me and DP have a meet and greet with a lovely
stafford later this month. Very hopeful as he sounds like the perfect dog for us

We just adopted this gorgeous boy a week before Christmas. He has been an absolute delight. Obviously ill treated at some point as he can be very anxious but mostly a happy and very loving dog.

Anyone else hoping to add a rescue dog to the family in 2023?

We've had our new rescue dog for 3 weeks. She's a four year old lurcher from Ireland and is gorgeous. We waited a few months and the rescue found us the perfect dog. There seems to be loads of lurchers being dumped at the moment. ☹️
