Should we be provided the KC names of a puppy's parents before taking the puppy home?

This really. We've been in contact with a breeder and we're planning to go and visit and view the puppy next week. We've been told that the puppy will be KC registered and that both the parent's are registered and have been fully health checked. They're not close to us so I can't go and look at the paperwork easily so I've asked for the KC names of the parents before we go so that I can check this against the KC health records but the breeder will not provide the KC names of the parents to me beforehand. This is ringing alarm bells as I feel they're trying to hide something but wanted to check if that is indeed normal practice.

Yes of course, I presume I just pick up the PM from my account?

schloss · 31/12/2022 22:58

@Redheadedwoman sorry that reply was for you.

bevelino · 31/12/2022 22:58

@schloss I will message you tomorrow as it seems that is not possible to send a pm via iPad. I will need to log on to my laptop.

You would be able to check the breed coefficient if you have the names…ie check they are not closely blood related

sre the providing you with evidence of health checks/dna check

I have never paid to go on a waiting list nor have I paid a deposit until I have seen the puppy in person (4-6 weeks is usual for a visit, IME). It's also potentially not a great sign that both parents are there - there's not many breeders who will have two unrelated and perfectly complementary dogs in their ownership. Possible but worthy of further investigation. Where are the reviews posted?

Hi @currahee is your message for me? If so , the breeder has explained that we can see both parents on collection. The reviews are on the internet. The website is cockerdoodlepoo.com. Please let me know what you think. Thank you in advance.

@bevelino @Redheadedwoman I am getting posters mixed up! So sorry. No problem @bevelino I will pick up the message whenever you send it.

I have just had a look at the breed clubs for the breed, there is at least 2 of then, both of which have a list of breeders on there and also lots of information about the health tests, including DNA ones for the breed.

That’s a puppy farm.

puppies aren’t bred in the family home, but in kennels outside “within 10m of the home”. they are breeding multiple breeds, “designer” breeds, very slick website, plus the demands for money upfront, owning both parents, and not allowing visits.

red flags everywhere.

Notanotherusername4321 · 01/01/2023 01:37

130k profit per year 😳

that’s bulk breeding and making a lot of money from churning out puppies.

That’s horrible (the above information) please stay away from them

“If so , the breeder has explained that we can see both parents on collection.”

Yes and sorry, my explanation of why this could be a red flag may not have been clear. You would not normally expect the sire to be present - to find the very best match of size/temperament/colour/conformation/working ability (whichever are relevant) complementary to the bitch, in a dog you already have, would be quite unusual and most would be using an external stud dog and be able to explain the reasons for their choice. Not just using a dog they happen to own, because he’s convenient and has functioning testicles.

The link? I see a large scale commercial breeder of multiple breeds/crosses, kept in kennels, breeding the maximum numbers of litters from a bitch before moving her on when she has no more financial worth.

Really? They had two bitches in season at exactly the same time, and they decided to have a litter off both?

Firstly, that stretches credulity. Secondly, even if it is true, rearing one litter properly is a job and a half. To aim to have two sets of pups on the ground at the same time, and another litter only three weeks apart?

Run, don't walk, away from this one.

Two litters at the same time isn’t necessarily a red flag on its own. I know some very good breeders who have two breeding bitches and have imported a stud to widen the gene pool and improve health. If the seasons tie up they will use the stud for both. Those puppies have been amazing examples of the breed but extra help needs to be brought in to make sure the pups have the best start.

so I wouldn’t automatically discount it but I’d want to know why. Id run a mile from more than one breed.

Cockerdoodlepoo??? Jesus this is everything that is bad with dog breeding. Basically a mongrel dressed up as a designer dog amd screams puppy farm!! No thought as to the individual breed characteristics or health/behavioural issues that could occur crossing 3 different breeds FFS.

I think I have found a reputable KC breeder, but have been asked to Pay £50 (non refundable) to go on their waiting list and £400 deposit. The breeder doesn’t allow home visits until collection of the puppy due to concerns about infection, particularly parvovirus. They have video calls from when the litter is 3weeks. We can meet the puppy parents at collection.

The breeder has 5* reviews on the internet. Is this ok?

No, no reputable breeder would take a deposit to go on a waiting list.

www.thekennelclub.org.uk/search/find-an-assured-breeder/?Breeds=&Location=&Distance=15&TotalResults=0&SortNearest=False

i can’t find them on the KC list of breeders either.

it looks like the parent dogs are KC registered, but the puppies can’t be as they aren’t pedigree.

because they aren’t KC registering the puppies they don’t have to comply with KC breeding restrictions on numbers of litters per bitch etc.
