Dew claw

My dog ripped out his dew claw on a walk a couple days ago (he has previously broken this dew claw and vet cut it right back) it doesn’t seem to be bothering him, he’ll let me touch it etc but he does keep licking it! Not sure if it’s a vets job or not for the little nub that’s left behind. Any advice??

They don’t do anything other than pull loose ones off or trim it if it needs trimming - just try to stop him licking it and watch for infection.

Mine’s caught and ripped or partially ripped his like 4 times now 😐 he’s only 2 😂

We had a dog that would do this periodically.

We simply kept it clean and stopped him licking at it (too much) but otherwise he was always fine. It regrew and - eventually - broke off again.

We talked to the vet about whether it would be better form him to remove but it is quite a serious operation and we didn't thing it worth it as he only ever broke the claw clear off every year or so.

Working on getting him used to clipping/filing it might be worth it. Then you can keep it short and smooth to try and reduce the chances of it catching?

My dog ripped out an ordinary claw. It was kept bandaged for 24 hours and that was it. It's never regrown.
