Dog travel UK to USA

Evening all,

Has anyone on this board ever successfully transported their dog between the UK and the USA by air? If so, how was it for the dog?

You can travel with your dog by ship to new york

there was also someone on Insta I followed who chartered a private plane with a group of other people with dogs so could fly in cabin with them

i would never send a dog without me - but I know other people do

I’ve done the ship between Southampton and New York. (FYI, @Wanderingoff you can kennel cats on board too. And the private plane idea sounds good too)

I’ve also flown them long haul.

Which was better? Depends on the dog. Depends where you are traveling from and to. If you’d like to ask questions, go ahead.

Firstly, how big is the dog and is flying them in-cabin from Europe to the US an option?

It was ok. It served it’s purpose as our cat wasn’t ok to fly in cargo and survived a couple more years after the journey.

Not sure if I would repeat it with the dog I have. She wasn’t entirely happy about being left overnight in the kennels, but I’d say if you’ve kennelled your dog before, and they aren’t anxious about it, go for it.

The staff were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. They would order anything you wanted from room service for the pets. My dog now has a thing for chopped, peeled cucumbers of all things.

(People couldn’t get food sent up to the kennel for anything 😂)

The kennels were meticulously clean - tough job as a couple of the dogs were very ill. (nothing contagious- just stressed and took a couple of days to settle)

Many of the dogs had been on the ship before and those owners were very upfront about how the experience depends on the group. I dare say we had three dogs in our group that made the experience more challenging. Two were so stressed they were ill, one was just an arse and a bit bitey as it turned out. The owners contributed in both cases.

Having the only cat with 18 dogs was difficult, so I’m sure the some of the dog owners felt perhaps that we ruined it for them. There is no separate area for the cats to stretch their legs indoors but the “lounge” is split into two. We were allowed to have her out in the inner lounge, she was dog savvy and didn’t give a hoot. Dogs who were fine with cats didn’t give a hoot either and so we sat around together just fine. Those that didn’t, had to stay in the outer lounge, which was less comfortable and more functional or had to be outside on the deck.

We didn’t always have her out, particularly during bad weather as we were trying to be considerate, but it didn’t seem fair.

ironically, the cat paid the most to travel as you have to book two kennels for a cat. One for them and the second for their litter box. Think it was about £1800 for her, £900 for the dog and I think we paid £700 each 😂 we were incredibly lucky though as we booked very last minute…
