Need a good budget dog food for lab?

PlinkPlonkFizz · 17/12/2022 15:20

Our lab is a year old, spayed, loves her grub. Currently on a mix of Hills and home cooked meat/sweet potato, with bones/Kong / dental chews on work days (4) for keeping her busy.

We need to save a bit more so are there any fairly good quality but cheap dog foods out there? I'm concerned saving will result in stinky or sick pooch but maybe someone has found a winner that is cheap?

Have a look at NatureDiet , I feed the wet to my dog but they also do a dry sensitive , it’s very good quality at a reasonable price - and my dog has been brilliant on it .

PlinkPlonkFizz · 17/12/2022 15:32

@Floralnomad I will investigate this, thank you! 🙂

I use Skinners from an animal feed shop, massive bag £24 i top up with a bit of wet foood, or sardines, or an egg for variety. Lasts my two dogs weeks.

GetOffTheRoof · 17/12/2022 15:43

Tails.com is what my picky Romanian gets because she's also allergic to wheat and grain, so I can adjust the ingredients in the food. I then top up with sardines, eggs, cat food for flavour 😂

They do a free trial month with £1 shipping on a referral basis if you wanted to try it - we often delay a bag arriving as it stretches further than a month for us. : tails.com/friend/ALLISM8P/?utm_medium=logged-in

Tails is super expensive
Autarky is reasonable quality and reasonable price, about £24 for a 15 kg bag

GetOffTheRoof · 17/12/2022 16:01

Tails is £21/month for us. 18kg dog. Comparable hypoallergenic dry dog food is twice that price.

OP, you could also look on www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/ and look at both the prices and the quality of the food you're considering. Hills is generally rated very poor quality - for example: www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0129/hills-science-plan-adult-1-6-medium

We use Wagg Worker and it's seems fine.

We always go for a "better quality" food when our dogs are puppies or senior. I don't know if that's necessary but it's just something we do!

Spanielsarepainless · 17/12/2022 16:08

Chudleys, Autarky or Skinners.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 17/12/2022 16:09

CSJ or Millies Wolfheart

Janieread · 17/12/2022 16:13

Wagg. I'm sure someone will come along and criticise it, but it's cheap and our dogs love it, particularly soaked in warm water. Dogs are 13, 10 and 11 with no health issues.

Riverlee · 17/12/2022 16:15

We use Autarky for our lab

Happydays321 · 17/12/2022 16:15

Our elderly lab is on skinners working dog, grain free, she looks very well on it.

WhaleInAManger · 17/12/2022 16:19

Skinners.

tabulahrasa · 17/12/2022 16:22

Hills is massively overpriced for the ingredients, you could pretty much swap for any cheaper dog food and it’d be better tbh.

Just make sure you swap it over gradually and she should be fine.

onmywayamarillo · 17/12/2022 16:24

We have wainwrights from Tesco £32 for a huge bag. My lab loves it
Don't get the lamb one it makes her pong a bit

Whoneedsleep · 17/12/2022 16:55

Dr johns titanium.
All of mine look good on it, no itching. I add in leftovers/some tinned dog food as a topper.

LakeFlyPie · 17/12/2022 18:35

This website is useful for comparing nutritional content.
We get Pooch and Mutt dry food for DDog (who has a sensitive stomach) and always manage to find 20-30% discount codes online.

PlinkPlonkFizz · 17/12/2022 22:22

The suggestions are great 😊 cheers to all the posters.
@LakeFlyPie the website is an eye-opener for me, brilliant 👍

Harringtons.

SkiingIsHeaven · 17/12/2022 22:56

Chappie is reasonably priced.

I buy my dog food in bulk online. It works out cheaper and I don't have to lug it home either.

SmurfetteBlue · 17/12/2022 22:59

Dr John grain free is great for my pooch

Ignore me. Just looked on the website someone mentioned and it is all carbs. Sorry. I have always been told that it is good stuff.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 17/12/2022 23:07

Dr Johns here too. It's the only one we've found (from expensive to cheap) that doesn't have him pooing a ridiculous number of times a day.

Oh and Saturday is Sardine Saturday and he gets a ton of sardines for his coat. We get many many compliments on his shiny coat.

Soozikinzii · 17/12/2022 23:24

We give our lab Simpsons.they've won lots of awards and it's free delivery if you order 2 bags.

Womble75 · 17/12/2022 23:27

Autarky - only one our lab didn't react to. Reasonably priced and I used to get it on subscribe and save with Amazon
