My dogs got fleas what do I need to do?

My poor boy has been scratching and out of sorts so I took him to the vets, at first he said he was fine then combed his hind legs and found a few cat fleas. We don't have a cat, he has no contact with cats, he hasn't even seen any other dogs for a while and isn't that keen on mixing when he does. He's had a tablet to treat them, vet said it would sort him out in 1 to 2 hours then I give it again in a month. I do use flea treatment monthly anyway so no idea how he's got them, he has no interest in water, dead animals, etc Strange.
He does go on beds and sofas so we've hoovered everywhere and stripped beds and washed on hot wash. Vet said that was enough and not to worry but should I be doing anything else?
He had a groom 2 weeks ago and they never noticed them so hopefully he's not had them for too long. Is the vet right, will the fleas be dead now? I thought as I treated him he wouldn't get them. He's only 18 months old. Does seem bit more back to himself this evening.

Over the counter flea treatments don't work these days. Frontline stopped being any good several years ago. You need to always get regular flea treatment from your vet. My dog has Advocate (spot on) but others may have alternative suggestions. If you suspect fleas in furnishings, you probably ought to spray carpets, etc - vet can advise what sort of spray or other mners reading this will know.

I would get some Indorex and spray the whole house. Fleas can be difficult to get rid of.

Thank you, the flea treatment I use monthly is from the vet, my husband has bought some flea spray from pets at home so we will use that today.
The vet was so casual about it all, just said hoover carpets abd soft furnishings and that was all we needed to do!
