Spluttered when I saw these in TKMaxx today. I would find a pile of shredded rags in the morning!

Are they just for the gram though? Sure nobody would expect their DMutt to actually wear them for a night although at the local Greyhound rescue they do all wear fleeces Wink

Very normal and even highly recommended for greyhounds and whippets as they have absolutely no body fat whatsoever.

CMOTDibbler · 04/12/2022 10:02

My lurchers wear them, and adore them. Skinny Malinki is genuinely cold withou

Not specialist pjs. Just red, Santa covered, long sleeved and long legged. Apologies to all those hounds who already wear them! My little schnauzer refuses to walk if I even put a raincoat on her.

The ones sighthounds wear aren't normally specialist either - anything that provides an extra layer is really important for breeds like that.

I suspect the ones you saw are more for cute photos, but I do think it's important to remember that some dogs do need coats for comfort.

I think they are just for cute photos. That was the point of my (supposedly) light-hearted thread.

Putting a coat on a dog because it has no body fat or is old and needs the warmth or it's pouring with rain when you go on a walk is entirely different from buying dressing up pyjamas.

My dog has a fluffy coat but she's 11 years old now and since she's older, when it's raining or there's a really biting cold wind I'll pop a coat on her as she seems a bit more comfortable with the added protections. She would not tolerate wearing one when she was younger though.

I'm with you OP. I really can't see the need to make a dog wear silly pyjamas, or any other outfit for that matter, for your own silly amusement.

Dogs shouldn't be treated like toys to play dress-up with.

My dog wears a jumper in the house in winter and sleeps in it. She goes to get it if we forget.

I think some people take it as an attack because threads on the doghouse have a tendency to get a bit heated, lol.

There was a thread not long about coats on dogs and it descended into bit of a bunfight because some people genuinely didn't understand that some dogs need coats and it all got quite unpleasant.

If the purpose is to keep the dog warm and it works, does it really matter what the coat looks like, though?

My dog gets cold on long wintery walks so he has a Christmas jumper/coat that he wears. I don't think he cares that it has a Christmas pudding on it as it serves the same purpose as (for example) a plain black coat.

You're right. If the coat serves a purpose and keeps him warm the dog won't care if he's wearing a Christmas pudding😀

I suppose I was thinking more about dogs that don't normally wear a coat and might not want to put clothes on, especially if they're not that comfortable, but are being expected to 'dress up' at Christmas to amuse the owner.

SilverOtter · 04/12/2022 16:49

I've ordered my Vizsla a jumper for Christmas. She feels the cold and quite frequently cries at us until we put a blanket over her on the sofa😂

Oh definitely, I don't agree with that.

Mine happily walks and sleeps wearing his so I don't think he's too bothered, especially as he loudly protests if he does disagree with something (he's a beagle) Grin

I saw a Newfoundland wearing a Christmas jumper thing on our walk this morning

The poor dog looked embarrassed and I imagine its ancestors were turning in their graves

I honestly think that's a bit wrong - their coats are designed for the cold - surely a jumper could make them overheat?
