My girl was pts yesterday will her housemate be lonely?

So my darling Poppy had to be pts last night after being attacked by a large dog and couldn't sustain her injuries. She's a 12 year old Yorkie who was absolutely amazing and my shadow. I'm heartbroken of course but we also have another treasure who is a 9 year old Jack Russel who has a totally different personality to Poppy, likes a love but not so needy. She's acting off today which I'm not surprised. They weren't particularly close though they shared a bed sometimes and Dolly would give Poppy a back lick much to poppys annoyance. I've never been through this before with dogs. We lost our gorgeous boy cat last month as he was run over so it's been rough. We have 3 cats now and 1 dog. Dolly the jrt has always loved the cats and sleeps with them when she can. Poppy wasn't much of a fan she tolerated them but basically would have loved it if they had all moved out. What's the likelihood of Dolly grieving? I've read a load of stuff but would like to hear from anyone whose remaining dog handles being the only dog now. Thank you xxx

My younger dog definitely got depressed after the older boy was pts. It probably took five or six months for the moping to stop.

Oh that's so sad. We giving Dolly lots of extra love. She had her first walk without poppy today and was staying closer than usual x

I'm so sorry for your loss, rip little Poppy.

Yes, I'm sure Dolly feels her loss and will grieve for a while. I'm glad she has the cats for company and is getting extra attention from you. Gentle hugs to you, it must have been such a shock.

I am so sorry for your loss. We had brother and sister litter mates, and when the boy was pts we were very worried that the remaining dog would be lost and heartbroken. She was a little subdued for a couple of days, but once that initial period was over, to be honest she seemed to love being an only child. We were very prepared to get another dog just so she wouldn't be lonely, but she thrived on the attention and her personality really came out.

I'm not sure mine ever really noticed that the other one was missing. Although they were never best of friends, more like housemates who put up with each other. I felt a bit sad about it to start with, seemed she should at least have noticed something was different.

So now she's the only dog, she gets more of our time and attention, and our bond has grown stronger. Whereas she used to just trot along happily doing her own thing, now she's more responsive, more interested in me and what i'm doing. Like it's her time to shine? To show me the best of herself, in a way.

I think it depends on the dog - on two occasions previously we have got a second dog as the remaining dog was clearly unhappy - we left it about 6 months each time. Getting a new dog gave the remaining dogs (on both occasions) a renewed joi de vivre.

Current do has been on her own since we lost my darling JRT in January and after the first few weeks she was fine.
I'm sure she'd love another dog as she's very sociable but she certainly isn't an unhappy dog.

I came here with a similar issue. Lost my beloved big dog last week, aged 12 and my cat the week before that. Both remaining dogs seem subdued and sad . The older who is also 12 is quite bad, following us around, off his food, trembling. I don’t know what to do, apart from be extra loving. I may be just reading too much into it, but I really think he might be heartbroken.Remaining cat, on the other hand, is absolutely living her best life after losing her Mum!
