Saying goodbye to my boy

This morning I have had to go through the pain of having my boy put to sleep. He was a 12 year old golden retriever who we’ve had since he was 8 weeks old. He was absolutely gorgeous , so calm and a complete joy. I know it was his time but I am completely devastated. I can’t imagine life with him not being here. Does it get better?

so sorry op. the last act of love we can do for our pets is knowing if we need to them go. i am sure you gave him a great life. the pain is horrible and you need to go through the grief process. he was a member of your family. take care

elastamum · 12/11/2022 14:36

Really sorry. Losing a beloved dog is so hard, but you have done the right thing. I have had 3 PTS over the years. I still miss each of them, but now feel okay about it. They were a wonderful part of our family when my DC were growing up and we share lovely memories of them. It gets better.

I'm so sorry. I echo PP. The last kind thing you can do out of love.

I'm a week in after we lost our boy. Honestly, it's grief I didn't know I could feel. It still hits me in enormous waves but today is a bit easier than yesterday

Sending 💐. I'm so sorry for your loss. He sounds like a really special boy xx

My heart goes out to you. We had to let our Border Terrier go in February and it was like a bereavement.

Like with your Ddog it had to be done and we were with him, holding him during it all.

It does get better slowly.

So sorry.

You will always miss them in some way or another, no matter how much time goes by. But it won't hurt like it does now. I know everyone grieves differently, but for me personally, I have always thought that it's the cycle of life, and in letting one beloved dog go when it is time you are making room for some other lucky dog to have a great home...

OldTinHat · 12/11/2022 14:56

I'm so sorry. You'll never forget your dear friend but the pain does lessen. My dog was pts last year and I still talk to him everyday.

You've done the kindest thing in the world. Sending you Flowers

Thank you for all your kind comments. I knew it would be hard, but I didn’t realise it would be quite so hard.
My son can’t remember a time when he wasn’t there and he was my DHs dog so everyone is numb just now. We all agreed it was the kindest thing to do but you do feel guilty, did we do the right thing, could he have gone longer or got better.

I still miss all my old dogs, a good life and making the call at the right time is the most we can do for them though. They aren’t with us nearly long enough and it is so hard saying goodbye. Thinking of you OP.

I've been asking that all week. And the answer is, that you wouldn't have been able to go through with it if it wasn't xx

Our darling dog died yesterday and the grief is so raw. We had her for 11 wonderful years.

mathanxiety · 12/11/2022 17:43

So sorry.

It's the really hard part of having a pet but it's the last loving thing you get to do for them.

PeppaPigWorld · 12/11/2022 17:48

I'm so sorry for you. The love dogs have for us is so pure, it's not surprising that we grieve for them so much.

Please don't worry start questioning your decision though. It will have been the right one. Better a day too soon than a week too late, as the saying goes.

GenerallyGreenerGrass · 12/11/2022 17:50

You always worry about did you do the right thing, could they have gone on longer…but Op I can guarantee you did the right thing for your beloved dog.
I’ve been were you are many times and it’s absolutely gut wrenching and heart breaking…..but eventually it stops hurting so badly and you can smile at how wonderful they were and what a privilege it was to have had them in your life. Hugs 💐

Oh hes a gorgeous lad 🐶🥰.
In time it does get easier but give yourself time to grieve.
8 years on we still have our old boys food bowl and its now been handed down to our pupster.

EcoCustard · 12/11/2022 20:55

@Saddogmum73 so sorry what a gorgeous boy. I had to say goodbye to my beautiful boy on Wednesday after 13 years. I am beyond devastated and have moments that floor me like feeding our other dog, and picking up his drying coat today. Can’t imagine life without him after being by my side. No advice other than I know how raw it all feels.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 15/11/2022 12:26

He's a really handsome boy, OP xx

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/11/2022 12:29

What a handsome boy! It is so very hard, and people who have never loved a pet don't understand the pain. It does get better, but give yourself the time to grieve. I was a mess when I lost my 17 year old - she really was my "heart" dog and I still shed tears for her 6 years on. You will let another pooch into your life eventually, but wait until you are really ready - and you will know when this is.
