Teething pain - anything we can do apart from frozen carrots etc?

Our poor puppy is suffering with his teeth, panting, wild eyed, very bitey, frustrated etc. He can barely sleep which isn't helping.

We've tried frozen carrots, frozen yoghurt, lambs leg chews, yak chews, antlers and so on but they don't help for long

Also giving him doggy valerian for sleep.

Is it worth going to the vet? Will they be able to help?

He was off his food and subdued for a couple of days but just seems frantic now 😭

He's a 5mo springer

You could try a rubber chew (e.g. a ring or one of those kong sticks) that you put in the freezer so it's very cold.

You can also get relief gel - e.g. www.amazon.co.uk/Mark-Chappell-Ltd-Teething-Soothing/dp/B001F60AYO/ref=asc_df_B001F60AYO/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309842998506&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8123891948137477336&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046221&hvtargid=pla-653249594340&psc=1&th=1&psc=1

However I would take a puppy to the vet if I thought their pain was more than 'the norm' or it persisted without much let up for more than a couple of days.

Thanks sirsniffs, that's exactly what I was wondering re the vet. He's our 1st puppy so I don't know what's normal teething-wise. I know babies have little help other than bonjela.

I might just phone the vet and see what they think 🐶

Aww poor mite. Thanks for the photo!

Lots of insurances now are including free video vet consultations - might be worth checking if yours does as this could be a good one to chat through with them?

p.s sweet photo - I love a springer!

RedBonnet · 11/11/2022 20:15

Aww thanks guys, but he's a springer puppy so all my pics are of him asleep lol

His Teddy wasn't savaged for 4 days which shows how bad his teeth are...

Wet a tea towel and freeze it, feels nice to chew and numbs the gums

RedBonnet · 11/11/2022 21:04

I read about it but one I've yet to try penguin. Also ordered some gel 👍

Ah he's gorgeous op, we have a 4 month old black and white springer who looks very similar!

Personally I wouldn't give frozen carrots - they're great for 5 minutes but then turn into a floppy mess when they melt ime.

We give her whole carrots from the fridge which she loves. Also whole apples from the fridge...it doubles up as enrichment because she'll chew it, roll it, chase it, carry it around like a tennis ball, chase it again. I take it away when she's getting close to the core.

I also give her empty boxes, tightly closed, with a handful of biscuits in. Makes an awful mess but she chews and rips it up and generally keeps her busy for 20 minutes.

We found our pups alternated between wanting something hard to;chew on, and then the next day something soft.

we also used these occasionally.

We got some of the gel sirsniffs recommended and it works a treat. Difficult to apply though as he just wants to eat it lol

Olive branches & yak bars are good
and second a frozen tea towel or we also had a rubber bone you could fill with water and freeze

Just wanted to say he seems to be over it thankfully. Maybe 2 pre molars still to come in, but mostly back to normal. Just wants to try out his new teeth on my arm 🙈

He is funny though, his teeth keep clacking when he closes his mouth as he's not used to his big new teeth yet 🤣
