What time does your pup wake up?

If your pup wakes up early do you start the day early or put them back to bed?
Sunpup is waking up about 5am. DH is happy to start the day but it's way too early for me! We can't agree on the best way. Sometimes Sunpup is sleepyish sometimes full on manic at this time. I think put back in crate but he will cry and howl. He's fine going in crate as long as he's sleepy...

How old is your puppy? Ours woke up early for a while, we didn't use a crate though. We let her out for a wee then stayed in the room with her but ignored her. Once she got big enough to not need an early wee she started sleeping til 7am or later x

My pup is 17weeks, she's always been pretty lazy in the mornings, only ever had 1 wee overnight. She sleeps in my room by my bed in a little sectioned off space so she can't wander round the room, she usually wakes up around 6am but only because she wants to get on my bed with me 😂 she gets straight under the covers and sleeps on my arm and doesn't even want to get up when the alarm goes off.

Spidey66 · 28/10/2022 09:07

Our dog sleeps in the kitchen. She normally wakes at 6.30 ish. If I'm working I'm up at that time but usually we open the back door so she can use the yard but close the internal door so she's not all over the place. She gets her breakfast anytime between 7.30 and 9am.

Spidey66 · 28/10/2022 09:08

Ps she's not a pup though, she's almost 4

Sunflowers765 · 28/10/2022 09:09

Sunpup is 10 weeks old. He's going out for a last wee at 11pm ( have to wake him up for this) 5am then seems to be his time. I know this is brilliant for a baby, just having a argument / discussion about whether he should go back to sleep or start the day!

There is quite a lot of napping in the day because he's so little, and very sleepy evenings

For his age that’s really good, as he can go longer he’ll likely stop waking up so early
our pup did 1030 - 630 from about 14 weeks and then by six months would go later

the dark mornings will help too

Tomanycarrots · 28/10/2022 09:59

Also when pup was younger we’d let him on our bed after he’d been out and he’d go back to sleep but if we were downstairs he was fully awake

tizwozliz · 28/10/2022 10:05

At that age we didn't put pup back in the crate but we'd doze on the sofa/armchair together until a more acceptable hour - 7am ish.

Campervangirl · 28/10/2022 10:15

Mines 7 yrs old, she spends most of the night trying to sneak in my bed but she's only got little legs so she wakes me up trying to scramble up the side of the bed, her bed is beside mine.
I usually give up putting her back in her bed and wake up at 5:30 with alarm and she's under my covers, I get up, she'll come down for a wee then go get back into bed, she's usually still there when I leave for work at 7 🙄

certainshepherdpups · 28/10/2022 12:45

When mine was very little, he woke up at about 5:00. I would take him outside for a wee, then bring him back inside and he would usually sleep for another couple of hours. That was for the first two weeks or so that we had him. After that he began sleeping until 7:00 or later. Nowadays I often have to wake him up! He’s now over a year old. I never used a crate overnight.

thelobsterquadrille · 28/10/2022 13:24

At 10 weeks old I do think 5-6am is pretty normal. They're only babies after all.

Mine is almost five now and we have to turf him out of bed most mornings - given the choice he'll sleep until 9-9.30am quite happily.

Sunflowers765 · 28/10/2022 14:04

I'm pretty happy with 5am at his age, just wondering whether to put him back in crate or let him start the day!

11 week old border terrier. We keep her awake from 9-10.30 with a king or gentle chew then wees, settle down, carry to crate in bedroom. She then sleeps until 3 am when I get up to carry her down for a wee then right back to bed. She then has to bribed out by OH at 7.30. We are going to start moving the 3 am wee back now 15 minutes a night and see how we go. If she sleeps before bed she’s a bitey shit face at bed time. So we keep her up.

Newpeep · 28/10/2022 15:03

She can’t do stairs yet as she’s too small so she’s carried. She sleeps well in a crate in our room.

beabon · 17/02/2023 21:47

Ive had to stop mine from creeping into her crate around 9.30... so let her have a nap tonight from 7.45ish to 8.20 and keeping her gently entertained for next few hours...think they go through stages

Freshstarts22 · 20/02/2023 20:47

Mine at that age went to sleep around 8pm in crate and was always ready to start the day before 6am plus a couple of night time wee breaks. The early morning wake up calls continued until she began sleeping in my bed around 1year.

She would never go back to sleep in the mornings and would be full on. Until around 9 month when she began to occasionally go back to sleep with me on the sofa.

We went on holiday around this time and as she was in a strange place she wouldn’t go in the crate. I had her in with me and never looked back. She now sleeps until I get up whether that’s 7am or 10am!

Sunflowers765 · 20/02/2023 22:38

I'm pleased to report that Sunpup is now 6 months old and is sleeping happily in his crate from 10:30 pm until we wake him up at 7:30 am, and has done this since about 12 weeks old! 😀😀

Just to say. My whippet is 3 and still sleeps in his crate at night. He loves it and willingly goes in there when he's tired. We shut the door about 10pm and we get him up when we get up so weekdays 7am and weekends can be as late as 8.30. if he needs a wee before that he will bark and we will get him out.

This is reassuring as our puppy (12 weeks) is waking any time between 5.45 and 6.30 at the moment which is too early for us. Although totally understand that this is how it is for now. Really hope they sleep a bit later when they are older 🤞

Jeni1206 · 27/02/2023 14:14

Ours is nearly 6 months, and is still up about 5am for a wee. Last wee break before bed is 10pm or shortly after. He is up in our room and cries at the door, so does let us know, and will go back to sleep after till 6:30 ish (but I never manage to!).
