Puppy panting at night

Puppy is 16.5 weeks, we’ve had him since 10weeks and haven’t cracked the nights. He’s happy enough to go into his crate and his crate is in our room (after us sleeping on the sofa for the first few weeks!) but the last few nights he’s started heavily panting like ALL night and just not really settling. I’ve read this could be anxiety (he’s not over hot or thirsty) but what can I do for this? He’s literally in our room, I talk soothingly to him

I need to sleep desperately and don’t know what to do - should we dispense with the crate? If we do he can’t be in our room though so we’d have to leave him downstairs. Done all the usual stuff in terms of making the crate somewhere he should feel safe and secure in but the one we also have downstairs he also never goes into willingly - is our dog just not one that should be crated?!

Our dog did that for a bit - then stopped when he was about 18 mo.

Panting can be stress so perhaps pup is stressed by crate. If the crate is in your room can you not just let pup sleep out of crate?

@Aria20 no we can’t have him out of the crate upstairs - I did read it’s also possibly stress. Last night he was actually fine so I wonder if it’s temperature or if he just needs more wearing out in the evenings
