The phrase PP mentioned above is pig ugly not pug ugly, I think?

Also, OP, the phrase is 'must admit' not 'must've met'. Sorry you've had a shock, I agree with PP that your dog was not likely to have a long healthy life.

Maybe it's because SHE CAN'T BREATHE

My Frenchie can breathe just fine!

In response to OP, many of the French bulldog groups I'm on have dogs that are 10+ years old.

This.

Yep. Seconded. Ridiculous breeding to produce these deformed dogs.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 22/10/2022 00:10

My parents have a 19 year old mongrely terrier who chased (admittedly not the most athletic chase) a pigeon around their garden today. I do feel sad for all these flat faced dogs. Certain breeds becoming fashionable is never good news for the animals. A colleague had an English bulldog who couldn't manage anything other than a 5 min walk.

how strange that other dogs are repelled by French Bulldogs. Never heard that before.

Emmelina · 22/10/2022 00:18

I didn’t realise this was a widespread thing. My friend’s daughter has one and for a good while she was saying how he kept being started on for no apparent reason.

He’s about 2.5 years old now and has had so many issues, operations on his eyes, several worrying complications with upper respiratory infections, has a severe underbite so has had dental treatment. She is always up the vets with him.

Calledhimtwice · 22/10/2022 00:19

A good French bulldog breeder breeds for health first and foremost, I currently have a litter who the vet commented on as the best litter of Frenchies he's seen in a long time.

Don't tar them all with the same brush. My girl can run for miles and has never had any health issues. Her only problem is she farts the house out 😂

BitossiBlues · 22/10/2022 00:23

The idiom is definitely pug ugly. But it has nothing to do with dogs. It's a shortened word from the word pugilist - i.e. a boxer (whose faces would be swollen and bruised after a fight and therefore ugly).

ErrolTheDragon · 22/10/2022 00:24

If you look at lists of dog lifespans, they're a bit variable by region but overwhelmingly it's the giant breeds which have markedly shorter lives on average. This list is mostly giants, with frenchies and cavs and one or two midsize.

Mylittlesandwich · 22/10/2022 00:27

Mumsnet is very much adopt don't shop. So take some replies with a pinch of salt. Frenchies vary massively. One lives near me and you can hear him coming a mile off, very snuffly. My friend has one who she chose very carefully from a breeder who prioritised health over looks and he breathes completely normally. You can see on their faces though the difference in their noses.

And the much disparaged miniature dachshund is up there with the best of them at almost 14 years.

You're obviously devastated, and I feel for you in that. I've owned adored animals whose health checks at the vets I increasingly dreaded the older they got. Yes, the 'squashed nose' breeds have many health issues, as do other breeds such as for eg. German Shepherds and the muscle-degeneration in their back legs, and specific other issues associated with specific breeds. Yes, it's cruel and it's wrong to breed dogs for looks without concession to the health issues this creates. However. ...

You didn't know. Now you do. All any of us can do is live and learn. In the meantime, I hope your dog has a comfortable and happy life with you Flowers

Farts is an problems with the GI tract so it is a health issue.

You're being ridiculous ffs 🙄
You don't like Frenchies, fair enough, but don't you dare try and dictate to me, i probably have 10000x more experience with them than you have,
You're stating your opinion, I am stating a proven fact- my dogs are healthy, and I know many others who are too, because they have been bred well.

TheHappyLoser · 22/10/2022 00:52

@Eeksilon, you need to Google how averages work.

What do you advise your buyers that the average lifespan of their puppy is out of interest. Also do you mention the many health problems? It seems so strange that people are being told all of this and the thousands it costs to fix and still want to buy onw. Then again , people are weird.

Vegay · 22/10/2022 01:00

@Jessiesthedog I'm so sorry you are distressed by hearing this. I'm heartbroken for both you and your beloved dog .Yes, she was born already and I'm sure she has a good life with you, but by you BUYING her, you perpetuate the cycle of breeding such dogs. It's really simple, don't buy dogs!

Carlycat · 22/10/2022 01:21

Yes. Because she's interbred to within an inch of her life and she can't fucking breath. Shame on you 😡

Carlycat · 22/10/2022 01:22

ToadSmall · 21/10/2022 20:35

You can't move for them where I live. All with docked tails.Sad

That's because they're bred ( raped ) in Europe 😡

crostina1 · 22/10/2022 01:27

I once came across a pug/daschund cross. It was horrifying, it was 2 and limping along panting like a very elderly dog.

Bollocks. All greeders care about is money. They couldn't give a flying fart about the poor dogs. No such thing as responsible breeders and YOU ALL KNOW IT DONT YOU 🙄

She breathes perfectly well thank you. I must’ve met I am very shocked I was told 10 years. Obviously there’s a lot of conflicting information online but the facts are she was going to be born whether I bought her or not so she’s come to my house and she lives a very good life.

🤦🏻‍♀️ Think that through OP, if you can.

The irony. The ‘cunts‘ are the breeders and those that buy from them.
