Lyn29 · 18/10/2022 17:43

I have a just over 8 week old Golden Retriver and is scratching and itchy all the time, especially at night and sometimes wines when his scratching. His been vets, had flea, mite treatment blah blah, is on hypoallergenic food, has been checked by the vets but she just said dry skin. But when I mean his scratching it's constant and there no let up, it's horrible to see him so miserable and I really don't know what else to do ? Anyone?

What does the breeder say? 8 weeks should not be having any problems - what did the very say?

difficult to judge with seeing the skin or taking a sample

Rocketclub · 18/10/2022 17:46

Vet say?

no puppy should have this problem on collection

eurochick · 18/10/2022 17:46

Could be a food allergy making his skin itchy.

Lyn29 · 18/10/2022 17:47

The breeder won't answer my calls or messages and the vet just said dry skin and didn't seem like it was a big deal. I've ordered some fish oil to add to his food but I don't know what else to do to give him so relief

Definitely not fleas, despite treatment? Have you thoroughly combed him through?

Could you try a dog anti histamine for a while?

Lyn29 · 18/10/2022 18:01

No fleas, I've gone all through him a hundred times. I will call the vet tomorrow about a antihistamine, thank you

It might at least break the itch - scratch - itch cycle he's in

Haycorns4Piglet · 18/10/2022 18:12

Poor love!! My dog was terribly itchy as a puppy. She still is, but it improved a bit since we changed her diet. Does your pup sneeze a lot too?

thelobsterquadrille · 18/10/2022 19:03

If there are definitely no fleas, I suspect it's some kind of allergy.

Was he like this when you picked him up? What did the "breeder" say it was?

washingbasketqueen · 18/10/2022 19:05

My dog used to itch a lot and it was horrible to watch- started when he was about 18months. He now take Apoquel daily and it has helped a lot. I also use an oatmeal shampoo/ conditioner recommended by vet and he definitely itches less after he's had a good scrub.

TranquilBlue · 18/10/2022 19:51

Has the vet considered demodex? It’s not that itchy for most dogs but some do get itchy with it. It’s relatively common in puppies and would need more than just one or two doses of generic flea/mite treatment to deal with it.

MarmiRae · 18/10/2022 19:55

If you give an antihistamine please make
sure it doesn’t have caffeine - you can only give them certain ones (for example, piriton and NOT piriteze). I would go back to the vets and say you need something to help soothe pup’s skin. Maybe ask if you can bathe them in something to help calm the irritation? Perhaps oats in water (or whatever it is people use when their child has chicken pox)?

Jericha · 18/10/2022 20:09

Chicken is a common allergen for dogs, and goldens can be a sensitive bunch. My goldie is allergic to pretty much everything but chicken makes him especially itchy.

Endogal · 18/10/2022 20:14

You've probably already thought of this since you've switched food but have you switched treats too? Would recommend sprats if not. Our lab loves them (great for training as they smell so strong) and switching to them alongside hypoallergenic food has massively helped her itchiness.

MarmiRae · 18/10/2022 20:41

@Endogal i heard labs love sprats - I bought my lab some and he spat them out! He’s a fussy one!

YourWinter · 18/10/2022 20:45

Get him off kibble and onto fresh food. Balanced raw food should make a massive difference. He’s 8 weeks so presumably you haven’t had him long - was he itchy when you saw him with his mother? What food was he weaned onto?

Spanielsarepainless · 19/10/2022 14:35

My puppy (Lab) was itchy and he's sensitive to chicken. Now he's on a fish-based food he's fine. But goldies are prone to random skin things!

Lyn29 · 19/10/2022 14:41

Thank you all. Woke up this morning and he was bleeding from itching so much. Have contacted the vet- waiting for them now. Just checked and the hypoallergenic food that recommended is chicken so now I'm worried that it is a chicken allergy.

My dog is chicken- intolerant and one of his symptoms was persistent itching. He's much better since eliminating all poultry products from his diet. Still gets some seasonal grass related itching which is treated with Apoquel tablets

@MarmiRae

you need breed testing, yours isn't a lab! They don't spit anything out.

😂😂😂😂

MarmiRae · 19/10/2022 16:35

@FistFullOfRegrets tell me about it! He’s the only Labrador I know who isn’t motivated by treats! He spits out food he doesn’t like and the other labs he plays with gobble them up from the floor!

MarmiRae · 19/10/2022 16:37

@FistFullOfRegrets This was him as a pup ❤️

Poor little love 😢😢😢 we've put ours on ava sensitive skin and tummy which is fully fish based and grain free and she is doing so well, noticing less itching in a week.

A little random but the two men who own Pets on the Pier on Llandudno pier are great with itchy dog advice, they have a dog who was the same and they are really good to get help from. I can’t see a phone number for them they are apparently on Instagram, they were great with our Scottie.
