When did you get your bitch spayed?

Our vet has suggested we get our pup done sooner rather than later, as there's no evidence to suggest going through a season is beneficial for them.

They said we should book in anytime from 6m.

Just wondering what other people's experiences are.

Our sprocker was 6 months.

It was done mainly as our other dog was 7 and entire; and partly to minimise the risk of mammary cancer. It was a nightmare keeping her quiet for a few days but she recovered amazingly well. For reference, we had a labrador before and waited until she was nearly 2. She was riddled with arthritis by 7 so it clearly made fuck all difference to her growth/development. That's why we didn't wait this time.

My vet said 6 months on the dot for my GSD. I'd also asked a friend who's a vet for his opinion as I thought it was too soon. He said it was the latest advice and there were benefits either way to doing it younger or waiting until after a season, but ultimately it was my dog, so my choice and not to be pressured if I wasn't happy. Decided to follow my vet's advice and I'm not convinced it was the right choice. She has always been dainty in size, but also immature. She was very late to calm down compared to my previous bitch. She still looks and sometimes behaves like an adolescent and most people think she's about 18 months and find it half to believe she's 5.

I wouldn't change her for the world, but she's my 3rd shepherd and I've found her very different to the others and I often wonder if it's down to the early spay. I think I'd wait until after the first season again next time, unless I saw some very compelling evidence to the contrary.

I think we'll be getting our lab spayed in a couple of months. She'll be 18 months then, 3 months after her second season. Although I do keep wondering whether we ought to wait until she's nearer 2 years.

3 months after first season. She was 15 months. Let her have a season and let hormones drop for 3 months. Then spay.
