Unfortunately the time has come to make an appointment for my beautiful old GSD.

We have decided on a home visit, where she will be more relaxed and because a trip in the car will be painful for her.

I don't feel like I can hold it together for a thorough conversation with the receptionist and they're usually quite busy and brisk anyway.

Could anyone give me some tips on the practicalities? I understand the process but am unsure of how to prepare and set up for their visit. Am I unreasonable to think she could be on her bed in the lounge room? I don't know what to expect in terms of body fluids, etc.

I'm sorry, this is a horrible topic to talk about if you've been through it yourself but if you're doing OK now and there's anything you can share that might help, I'd appreciate it.

This is not our first appointment either, she keeps rallying as soon as we book one, it really messes with my head. She's in an awful state physically but still so cheerful and loving.

Ultimately though I'd rather let her go a month early than a day late and end up in some emergency situation where she's suffering or scared.

Flowers to you and your lovely pets @RosalindsAFuckingNightmare and @CuriousMama .

Yes you are right. My ddog isn't happy.
I was confused as to why his appetite is so good but someone told me it's instinctive.
He's messing all the time. He doesn't seem bothered about it and has incontinence bands on. We bought loads of them.

Sending lots of love to you @TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet 💕

@millerpie you're a beautiful soul ❤️
I would foster ddogs but dh wouldn't and wouldn't be fair on him. Plus the dgcs. One is a baby. It's lovely you adopt seniors 🌹

This morning for me too. It's about 5am here and I'm wide awake listening to her snore contentedly.

Wishing you strength and peace @CuriousMama .

@TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet sending love and strength to you too. We're doing the right thing. Mine's had a sleep and now he's pacing around as per usual. I'll settle him back in his bed by sitting by him and stroking behind his ears.

@TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet @CuriousMama I'll be thinking of you in the morning. Sending peace to your precious dogs and peace and strength to you both 💐

I cancelled my appointment with the vets to have my lovely boy pts as he perked up and seemed so much better. We've had a lovely weekend taking slow walks in the autumn sun. Then in the early hours he started fitting. I'm just back from the emergency vets where I had to let him go. My heart is broken.

I'm so sorry to hear this ❤️ I had that rollercoaster too from May. You have given him so much love and you got extra time with him. He's passed with dignity. Be kind to yourself. Let the tears flow.
My boy passed Monday and I didn't think I'd stop crying. I was lucky as work were so understanding and covered a shift so I could have a couple of nights away. I'm much calmer now as I know I couldn't have done any more for him.
They're loaned to us for a short while and love us unconditionally. Take good care of yourself and I hope you can take comfort knowing how much you cared for him.

My beautiful girl left us last Monday too. It was the most peaceful ending for her, I am so glad we had the vet come to the house and so grateful for the advice on here which helped me prepare.

She ate an enormous (roast dinner) breakfast and was snoring away in a happy food coma when the vet arrived. She barely lifted her head at the doorbell, and more or less slept through the whole thing. It was definitely her time.

Her ashes came home today, which crushed me all over again. We need some time and space to decide what to do with them.

I'm so sorry for your loss @CuriousMama and @RosalindsAFuckingNightmare .

@TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet I'm so pleased for you that it was calm and peaceful. I still have my girl's ashes to scatter. We will scatter them at her favourite walk and there is also a dog memorial there where we've put a plaque up.

CuriousMama · 10/10/2022 17:25

@TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet I'm so pleased it was peaceful. Same as my boy. I hope the vet explained everything beforehand? I'm pleased ours did. They didn't for my mother in law (before I knew her) she's been haunted for years thinking the gasps were her dog trying to come back ☹️ Dh told her what happened and what our vet said and she's finally ar peace with it.

We scattered his ashes Saturday. I've been down today and chatted to him and sat in the bench imagining him running around. I won't lie I'm crying writing that. But I'm not sobbing.

Sending such love 💗
