What's the deal with dog rain coats etc

Black labrador, coming up to a year old.. likes to roll in fox poo etc.
What's the deal with all the little coats lots of dogs wear when it's wet etc?
I can see the benefit in terms of minimising the clean up after a muddy wet walk.. is that what they're for?
And if you use one and like it, any recommendations?

I have a very elderly lab, she has a thick coat, when she gets wet, it's really hard to dry her off sufficiently, and her arthritis plays up BIG time. She now has a waterproof coat, (it's also got the added advantage of being high-viz which is ideal for our evening walks) it's not brilliant, but definitely helps reduce her stiffness.
Absolutely no chance would I have got her a coat, before she became An OAD (old age dog).

Totally this. Makes such a difference to his enjoyment of walks - being cosy and dry. Doesn’t stop him throwing himself into every pond or puddle on our walk.

Jumping on the thread..

Has anyone ever found a coat (rain or otherwise) that has feet sewn in/attached?

My dog gets horrendous itching if his paws are wet. Tried various creams, pills, vet visits etc and nothing seems to help. Vet thinks it's a psychological thing rather than an allergy.
Thought perhaps a rain coat with "shoes" attached could help as he still gets to go for long walks in winter without the wet feet issue. We've tried dog boots but he can pull them off.

I use electrical tape around my dog's boots to keep them on! I don't think you'll find a decent coat with legs/boots that fits well unfortunately!

Thanks, I'd seen this one but it was an extra $55 for the boots as well, and coming from America I'd have customs and a large delivery cost to pay. It's a bit out of my price range I think!

Anthropomorphism meets capitalism and dog coats are their bastard lovechild.

Not for us. My dog is a saluki cross and has almost no fur at all on his belly. He’s skinny (is supposed to be), shivers in the cold and wet. So he has a raincoat and also a thicker coat for when it’s really cold.

We had an elderly rescue who was underweight when we got him. He absolutely hated the rain. We got him a Regatta raincoat, just to cover his back, and he was perfectly happy wearing it. It kept the worst of the rain and cold off his back. It was nothing to do with anthropomorphism or trying to make him look cute, it was about his comfort- people really shouldn’t be so judgemental.

Two of mine it's for minimal clean up (golden retrievers). I don't like showering them off and leaving them wet and cold so I prefer to keep the worst of the mud off if we're on the fields so I only need to hose legs.

My small breed is clipped and feels the cold. She also has arthritis. She wears pyjamas inside too in autumn/winter as she gets cold.
