What's the deal with dog rain coats etc

Black labrador, coming up to a year old.. likes to roll in fox poo etc.
What's the deal with all the little coats lots of dogs wear when it's wet etc?
I can see the benefit in terms of minimising the clean up after a muddy wet walk.. is that what they're for?
And if you use one and like it, any recommendations?

I use a raincoat onsie on my dog. I haven't got 15 minutes to spare in the morning to dry my dog off before work. Just being able to dry paws and go is great. This way my home doesn't smell of wet dog.

Fox poo.... sadly most dogs do this. Stinks the whole house out even if you just carry the dog to the shower. Best to wash dog off outside.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/09/2022 20:43

Nah, I have a grotty mud loving spaniel. A rydale cheap fleece in winter keeps the worst off his front legs, tummy and chest. Less to wash off once we are home. It's laziness of my behalf.

Raincoat? Nah!!!

Stellaris22 · 27/09/2022 20:49

We have a short haired dog so a quick dry with a towel is all she needs, never had a raincoat. But I get with long haired dogs they could be useful.

tedgran · 27/09/2022 20:56

I had Great Danes, they don't have an undercoat, hate rain so they always wore coats in wet or chilly weather.

iekanda · 27/09/2022 20:59

I have a dog who is tiny and low to the ground. He wears these - waterproof. There are elastics round the back legs and also the obvious round the body strap. It can't come off and he is always clean even if he goes filthy places.

My greyhounds have coats. They feel the cold, having thin skins and a very light covering of fur. I never had a coat for any of my German Shepherds, or the Husky that I fostered for a winter, however Greyhounds, as gorgeous as they are are not fans of the cold or wet.

Floralnomad · 27/09/2022 21:00

My patterdale x has a variety of Equafleece coats , suits and jumpers it makes getting him cleaned up after a walk so much easier . When it’s been raining and is muddy he either wears something or stays on his lead , fortunately he’s happy to wear his coats / jumpers . If the weather has not been too bad he goes naked but then goes in his dry bag when he gets home . I need him cleanish as he sleeps on the beds .

gogohmm · 27/09/2022 21:01

Ddog has a high vis raincoat for nights, saves stinky wet fur, and can see him easily

Tubbyinthehottub · 27/09/2022 21:02

I have a hairy mud magnet and she wears a fleece suit in bad weather so the hose down isn't such a massive job.

MaliMom · 27/09/2022 21:04

My belgian Malinios hates the rain with a passion, will run back in the house if it's spitting so I've just caved and got him a rain mac type coat

He dosent need it to keep warm and I don't care about mess but he's so miserable walking in the rain and sometime I can't put the walk off till later so figured if it helps him why not

Vicliz24 · 27/09/2022 21:09

My whippet wears either a fleece or a proper warm winter coat we had specially made for him . Whippets and greyhounds feel the cold .

CMOTDibbler · 27/09/2022 21:10

My salukish lurcher has more coats than I do, in fact he's snoring next to me in a camo fleece onesie right now. He has very low body fat naturally, a very thin and fine single coat, and is as tolerant of damp as an open packet of crisps. My other lurcher only wears a coat willingly if it is pouring with rain, or absolutely freezing.

Mine wears a rug because he has very fine fur and really feels the cold!

DeanStockwelll · 27/09/2022 21:12

My lab cross wasn't keen on rain but if we went out after I swear he could smell a muddy puddle half a mile away. !
But he hated coats he would let me put it on and set off for his walk with no problems but aa soon as he was off his lead he would grab hold of of it and yank it .
If he got hold of it near his hips he would spin in a circle and frequently fall over trying to get it off.

It was funny to watch 😁

Rubbish. My long haired border collie dislikes getting soaked just as much as you do. Yes, in lighter rain or showers he's fine and protected, but in heavy rain even "weatherproof" dogs get soaked to the skin. And perhaps that lovely summer weather has made you forget that in the UK soaking and torrential rain is hardly unheard of, and you can't just avoid walking the dogs whenever it rains a lot. Most dogs are not stupid - given a choice they will go out in finer weather. That isn't always a choice. So raincoats are necessary. One doesn't need to spend a fortune on raincoats either - if it keeps the dog drier then that is all it needs to do.

wishuponastar1988 · 27/09/2022 21:21

My staffy wears an equafleece - they are cosey and rain proof. They wash and dry quickly too

AlwaysLatte · 27/09/2022 21:24

We had coats for our last dog as she was little and used to shiver in the cold. But this one (lab) has a very effective coat of his own.

mountainsunsets · 27/09/2022 21:25

Mine has a coat. He's a short coated beagle and really feels the cold - he shivers and is really miserable.

Pop a coat on him and he's back to his normal self. We have an insulated one from Amazon I think, and then he has a drying coat for afterwards so that he can sit indoors and dry off without ruining my carpets and sofa Grin

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 27/09/2022 21:25

Mine wears zip up the back anoraks in winter. He gets cold - thin fur. It’s perfect protection from fox poo. I can sometimes get away with just hosing that down but dog staying clean! He used to have some beautiful quilted jackets with cord colours (a right bargain one time from Asda). He looked amazing in them. They even had. Little pocket in - for his bus fare my mum said ❤️ Unfortunately as they were underneath velcro fastenings more than once he emerged from the undergrowth sans said jackets 😞 so they’re no more! I assume maybe a fancy fox or squirrel wears Im them now. So he has close fit zip-ups now.

Haha! Yes - absolutely this

Badger1970 · 27/09/2022 21:28

My two spanners have got Ruffwear fleece jackets that they have on once they've been washed so they don't get too cold (older one has arthritis) but they'd be liabilities wearing anything on a walk......... far too much hedge surfing going on for coats!

There's a cockapoo up the road who goes out in a full raincoat, poor little bastard. He looks a twat and he knows it.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 27/09/2022 21:29

Cord collars- or maybe velvet actually!

Here he is in his anorak ❤️

Soubriquet · 27/09/2022 21:29

I have little dogs. The smallest is 2kg. She needs a coat in cold and wet otherwise her body temperature will drop very quickly and she could get poorly

Soubriquet · 27/09/2022 21:32

I don’t actually have a photo of my smaller girl
in her coat so here is bigger girl in her coat and hallowe’en costume. And then my small girl anyways
