What's the deal with dog rain coats etc

Black labrador, coming up to a year old.. likes to roll in fox poo etc.
What's the deal with all the little coats lots of dogs wear when it's wet etc?
I can see the benefit in terms of minimising the clean up after a muddy wet walk.. is that what they're for?
And if you use one and like it, any recommendations?

My lab loves the wet and doesnt seem to feel the cold but I'm all for anything that minimises the clean ups and makes life easier.
Thanks for the reccs. The equafleece look good! Any other recs?

My two spanners have got Ruffwear fleece jackets that they have on once they've been washed so they don't get too cold (older one has arthritis) but they'd be liabilities wearing anything on a walk......... far too much hedge surfing going on for coats!

There's a cockapoo up the road who goes out in a full raincoat, poor little bastard. He looks a twat and he knows it.

I was checking those out too. I think this is what i had in mind.

Gorgeous dogs!

Mine has one of these www.weatherbeeta.co.uk/weatherbeeta-comfitec-parka-1200d-deluxe-dog-coat

In the snow he also wears boots because the ice/salt irritates his pads.

And because he's dark, we have a high viz rug too www.viovet.co.uk/Flecta-Hi-Vis-Dog-Jacket-Yellow/c5063/ makes it a lot easier to find him when he's running around the fields at the farm!

Rainbowstripes · 27/09/2022 21:46

Hotterdog fleeces are good (similar to equafleece but cheaper I believe). B&M is good for cheap jumpers than you can stick in the wash - not as good quality as the fleeces but def help. I work outside all year round and my dog comes with me, he's a very lean rescue with a thin coat who really feels the cold so I have a cupboard full of jumpers and coats for him 🤣 We always had labs and shepherds before and never really needed to but I wasn't working outside at the time.

tizwozliz · 27/09/2022 21:50

I'm not sure a coat will help with the 💩 rolling. They rarely cover the bit if the neck/shoulder most labs like to lead with in their rolling.

Rarely see a lab walking in a coat tbh. We see a lot of spaniels in equafleece type things but assume their longer coat gathers up more mud otherwise.

We have a drying coat we put on post walk if muddy and wet which seems to deal with the worst of it.

KangarooKenny · 27/09/2022 21:52

My dog loves her Equafleeces, and waits for me to put one on her when going out for a wee in the rain !
Shes a toy breed so does feel the cold.

moonypadfootprongs · 27/09/2022 21:56

I used to think they were pointless and just a marketing ploy to get us all to spent money on pointless things.
Then I got my rescue dog.
When it's warm she loves getting wet and having fun in the water. But if it's cold she really hates it. She's a skinny lurcher type and doesn't have any excess flesh on her. When she gets cold it takes her along while to warm up and it really stresses her.
So she has a wax jacket type (doesn't like the rustling of the plasticky ones). If it's windy and wet she wears it for our walks. Particularly if it's late on in the day.
My lab doesn't need one but if it's pouring with rain for our last walk then she does have one so she's dry for coming in the house.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 27/09/2022 21:57

Those who question outdoor gear have never owned a Lurcher..

99redballoonsgobyy · 27/09/2022 22:01

some breeds feel the cold more than others so need a coat. I have a yorkie they do not have an undercoat of fur so really feel the cold he shivers so loves to wear a coat. He has the ancol muddy paws stormguard coat. Also a weatherbetta. I've bought cheaper coats from B&M etc but they don't last velcro wears away quick etc. He also loves his jumpers!

nomoreflyingfucks · 27/09/2022 22:08

I have a very elderly lab, she has a thick coat, when she gets wet, it's really hard to dry her off sufficiently, and her arthritis plays up BIG time. She now has a waterproof coat, (it's also got the added advantage of being high-viz which is ideal for our evening walks) it's not brilliant, but definitely helps reduce her stiffness.
Absolutely no chance would I have got her a coat, before she became An OAD (old age dog).

Calandor · 27/09/2022 22:10

Dogs stink when wet. Some dogs won't walk with rain going on their heads.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 27/09/2022 22:15

We have a black lab too and he’d look at me like I had 3 heads if I tried to put him in a coat! He loves wind and rain and especially snow and hates hot weather; the exact opposite of me!

SummerSazz · 27/09/2022 22:17

Mine loves wet and snow too but she is a retriever breed and double coated. She would give me a wtf look if I tried to put a coat on her. You can imagine how period pants went....

MomwasCasual · 27/09/2022 22:17

I have a Springer Spaniel, 80% pure white, who will happily get pissed wet through and waltz in like she's Axel Rose, shortly after sharing a tequila fuelled mud bath with two arm wrestling babes. 30 mins later, pristine white and fluffy dry again.

And then I have a greyhound cross, twice the size, who shivers in drizzle and mopes if he's a bit damp. He has a not very rock and roll raincoat.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 27/09/2022 22:19

My Vizsla unfortunately isn’t waterproof 🤷‍♀️

That made me laugh.
My dog has a raincoat . She's mortified when she has to wear it. You can actually see the embarrassment.
Needs must though.

DawkinsOldSpot · 27/09/2022 22:21

Exactly that reason much less cleaning after a walk and for fox poo incidents mean we can just take them off and wash them so less of smell gets on the dogs.
Also for warmth as one of our dogs shivers in the winter sometimes.

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 27/09/2022 22:23

My high maintenance pampered pooch - a fluffy Yorkie will not go out in the rain unless he's wearing one of his many coats.
My daughter dressed him in all manner of costumes since day 1 at 8 weeks so I guess he feels underdressed and naked without. He's currently asleep on me in his Halloween jumper pumpkin 🎃

FrangipaniBlue · 27/09/2022 22:26

MaliMom · 27/09/2022 21:04

My belgian Malinios hates the rain with a passion, will run back in the house if it's spitting so I've just caved and got him a rain mac type coat

He dosent need it to keep warm and I don't care about mess but he's so miserable walking in the rain and sometime I can't put the walk off till later so figured if it helps him why not

My dog is the same!

Hates getting wet, a raincoat means I have a fighting chance of at least getting him to the end of the road to do his business 😂

Branster · 27/09/2022 22:43

Your lab might loose the street cred OP if it has to wear a coat 😁

I don't think a coat would necessarily solve the fox poo issue, for some reason it can go everywhere on their beck and collar.

As for reducing the cleaning/drying time after walks, dogs will come with this issue! Forever cleaning after them.

Labs are some of the easiest dogs to dry in my experience and their coat doesn't hold that annoying invisible quantity of mud that ends up on the floor no matter what you do which happens with longer hair dog breeds.

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 27/09/2022 22:50

My small puppy needs a coat this winter if he’s walking slowly on lead or sat outside in the cold/wind etc. he’s only young and no fat on him so he gets very cold, very quickly.

Dogs don’t need coats when they’re running around, but if your dog is clearly freezing - shivering and unhappy - why wouldn’t you pop a coat on them?

Olivetreebutter · 27/09/2022 22:52

I have a Saluki cross (lurcher) who won't walk in the rain or cold without one. I wouldn't bother for a Labrador, they're designed to swim in cold water!

Joystir59 · 27/09/2022 22:53

Mine'd have your fingers off if you attempted to put a coat or jumper on him. JRT.
