Is anyone awake? It's been a difficult few days for my old boy and tonight has confirmed for me that it's time to say goodbye. It's gone 4am and it's been a distressing night for him. He seems to have finally settled and I'm exhausted. DP was up with him last night and said the same but now it's my shift and I can now understand what he was saying. He's my heart boy and has been by my side constantly for the last 9 years but he's clearly suffering now. My heart is broken.

Teenyliving · 19/09/2022 04:38

how lovely that he’s so surrounded by love at this time though

do you want to tell us about when you got him?

agutrew · 19/09/2022 04:38

So sorry.

Lovewineandchocolate · 19/09/2022 04:38

I'm so sorry, its the hardest decision but your faithful friend won't be suffering anymore and that's the kindest thing we can do xxx

BasiliskStare · 19/09/2022 04:49

My oldest I fear Is getting nearer to that point. @RosalindsAFuckingNightmare I do feel for you. But you know as @Lovewineandchocolate says , the kindest thing is to let them go peacefully - of course it means you will feel so much worse / sadder than do they .But as others have said on this thread , how lovely he goes surrounded by trusted and loving people.

Oh god yes, I will be with him. Absolutely. He's sleeping now at last. He's been pacing for the last couple of hours. I've cuddled him on the sofa for as long as he would let me. I can't stop crying. Thank you for your kind words.

Bless you darling I'm so sorry. My boy is 9 and I dread this - I could never ever replace him.

I have a younger dog but he is a totally different breed . My old boy has been my guard , my protector and my constant companion throughout the last few awful years . I can't get another of his breed again because of my circumstances. He is a gsd, beautiful, kind , brave and the absolute love of my life . I really do feel for you Flowers

So sorry, it's such a hard thing to do but the kindest when you know they're ready. I always find comfort in the below story of a six year old when they lost their dog.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life - - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

hagathachristie · 19/09/2022 05:40

That's so beautiful! Out the mouths of babes eh ?

So lovely x

I am so sorry. Sending you much love and support today and hope you are able to get through it just terrible for you all

I'm so sorry. We had our 11 year old greyhound PTS yesterday. She was an older dog but dramatically went downhill yesterday and could barely stand or move. We went to the emergency vet (not our usual) and stayed with her until she was gone. Previously, the local vet has come to our home, this was harder but I couldn't let her carry on until Tuesday and the vet was skilled and compassionate.

tedgran · 19/09/2022 15:01

My DHis a retired vet, he always says that it is the last kindness for your animal and shows your love for them.

Feeling your heartache still. After so many years.

Acts of love come in so many forms. Even when it seems so very wrong.

It is the kindest thing we can do for our loved beasties. Even though it fractures our hearts.

LostMumOfTwo. Sincerely. That was perfect.

Thinking of you and your boy today OP 🌻x
