Greyhound having surgery tomorrow :(

We have an 8 year old retired racing greyhound that we've had for about 3 and a half years, and we found a lump on her a couple of weeks ago. She had it removed last week, and the vet phoned today with the news that it was a malignant mammary tumour. The vet now recommends further surgery to remove the mammary glands either side where it might have spread to, and this is happening tomorrow. (I might have the surgery details wrong as DH took the call, but our vet has her own greyhounds and is fabulous, so I trust her to be doing the right thing).

Just wondered if anyone else had a hound who'd had similar and how their recovery went? This is a bit of a shock, as we'd thought the lump was nothing serious before getting the histology report back so we're all quite upset :( I'm sad for her having to have another surgery so soon after last week, and really hoping she's ok as the stats after this kind of thing don't look great.... Would welcome similar experiences?

I'm a greyhound owner too. We have had several over the years. They've never had a problem like this but the vet wouldn't recommend surgery if she thought it was too risky.

I think you just have to treasure every day you have with them.

How is she @PinkGrapefruitSorbet ? I'm a Greyhound mum too. There are quite a few active UK Greyhound Facebook groups with various experiences.

She's doing ok, thanks. The vet did a chest x ray and it hasn't spread, which is good news. She removed some more things around the original lump so we are reasonably positive that it's all gone. Ddog is very tired and hasn't been quite herself, but two general anaesthetics in ten days is a lot to recover from. I'll check out the Facebook groups, thanks for the recommendation!

Bless her x it's great you have a Vet who is 'Greyhound Savvy' something there seems to be a lot of anxiety about within the FB communities.

I hope she recovers well 🙏
