My dog ate a very toxic drug today. I feel so irresponsible!

I'm not sure what I want to say really. I thought we were responsible owners. Evidently not! Please don't be too rough if you respond, I'm devastated.

Our 10 month old pup, who is a rescue dog, our fourth rescue ffs, gained access to our bedroom today, via human error, the door was left open. He got old of a tube of NSAIDS gel and chewed and ate the contents - it's extremely toxic to dogs. When I realised, I took him straight to the vets and they induced vomiting, gave him IV fluids and activated charcoal. I have to wait 48 hours to find out if he has kidney failure, and I feel sick as fuck.

Please keep stuff away from your pups, I'm absolutely heartbroken that our stupidity could mean our baby might die. I never thought I would be writing this, but I am, and I don't want others to go through this.

I'm so sorry, try not to beat yourself up. It happens. It sounds like you got him to the vet quickly so hopefully the kidney function tests will come back okay. Sending unmumsnetty hugs. Flowers

LBF2020 · 13/09/2022 03:37

Let's us know how he gets on

ShirleyPhallus · 13/09/2022 04:08

You poor thing, I hope he’s ok

its a fair warning but also don’t beat yourself up about it, if a dog is determined they could eat almost anything and give themselves a mischief. Lots of dogs eat socks, pants, counter surf for food, eat small toys, rocks, sticks at the park, other animals poo etc etc.

So while prevention is better than cure dogs are made of pretty stern stuff and you cannot lick absolutely everything away always. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Backofthenet20 · 13/09/2022 04:38

Please be kind to yourself. I am sure you didn’t expect this to happen and you have them at the vets straight away. My friends dog ate her birthday control pills. A whole packet. Unfortunately it happens sometimes. All the best with their recovery

mountainsunsets · 13/09/2022 06:56

Please don't beat yourself up - it's so, so easily done. Dogs are determined little buggers and can get into all sorts!

Spanielsarepainless · 13/09/2022 08:16

My previous dog did something similar but it was an overdose of his prescribed NSAID. Keep him well hydrated when you get him home. I added a drop of milk to water to get him drinking more. It happens and you aren't a bad owner.

Trulyweird1 · 13/09/2022 08:19

Hope your dog pulls through . My lab ate something out on a walk which proved toxic, but the vets managed to flush it through his system and despite a scary couple of days, he is fine.
Dogs do this sort of thing. Please don’t beat yourself up.

Vegay · 13/09/2022 12:44

Thank you all for your kind words. He's still on IV fluids and the vets have said he is stable and perky. He'll have another blood test tomorrow, so I'll update once we have those results 🤞

Oh please be kind, accidents happen, not so long ago our puppy around 8 months old, ate a whole packet of my medication, I thought I had put it out of reach. We had to take him to the vets where they induced vomiting. The main thing is you acted quickly and took him to the vets

Kleptronic · 13/09/2022 20:38

I'm rooting for him 🤞

bluetongue · 13/09/2022 22:27

Please be kind to yourself.

My naughty whippet has managed to find medication a couple of times while I’ve been out. It’s just lucky that he’s not the type to randomly eat stuff or he would have been in trouble.

Vegay · 14/09/2022 19:57

Hi. Once again, thanks for all the kind words. Blood test results show his kidneys are all good 😁. He's going to be fine.

What a relief! So good to read!

SafariPark · 14/09/2022 20:00

Oh these pups!!! Im willing to bet 95% of dog owners have a similar tale 🤣 my dog has survived stealing a 5l container of antifreeze out of the garage and well meaning uncle feeding him a mince pie.. he's 10 now and thankfully too lazy to get up to these antics anymore.

LBF2020 · 14/09/2022 20:38

@Vegay that's fantastic news. I'm so happy for you 🤩

certainshepherdpups · 14/09/2022 21:16

What a relief that must be. I think many of us have been there. My dog managed to devour some Melatonin when he was a young puppy. I was terrified but he had no ill effects. It didn't even make him sleepy!
