How to get pup to eat dry kibble/food?

TwinkleChristmas · 12/09/2022 14:05

Pup is 12 weeks. We got her 3 weeks ago.

She came to us on wet food and I would prefer she was on dry.

She won’t eat dry food at all, so far Iv bought royal canin, lilys, Ava and she would rather starve then eat any of it.

Any tricks or tips on how to get her to eat it?

Iv tried using hot water to mush it down but still nothing.

Will she take it as treats when training ?

KangarooKenny · 12/09/2022 14:06

Have you tried mixing it in with the wet food ?

SirenSays · 12/09/2022 14:07

Mix wet and dry food together. Or mix the dry food with meat, fish and veggies.

DazedLion · 12/09/2022 14:14

She’ll eat it when she’s starving, I think we all would 😂, just leave her with it

tattychicken · 12/09/2022 14:16

Add it the wet, just a little bit to start. Once she is eating it happily, gradually increase the kibble and decrease the wet.

TwinkleChristmas · 12/09/2022 14:16

Iv mixed it. She just eats around it and leaves all the kibble.

I haven’t tried it as treats, il try that.

Hi, my boy has never liked dry food. He will eat it if he absolutely hungry but otherwise he turns his nose up at it which is annoying as its the easiest food to store in the cupboard! he is on raw at the moment, just an idea, if you have the room maybe you could buy a small freezer and buy few packs of raw a week see if she likes that better? I only buy 3 packs a week to save on the storage space. Just a suggestion, as like I said my boy never ended up liking dry food so your girl might be the same.

She stopped eating her wet food she came with so Iv actually got her on Bella & duke raw puppy food.

However, she seems to be going off that too now! I have 11kg of it in the freezer though 😅

I seem to remember that my then pup went through several foods until she settled on one. And she would not eat when starving, she would vomit bile, so we needed to feed what she would take.

Oh god what are they like. My boy is exactly the same i feel your pain. I just try to persevere with him and if he doesnt eat it after 10 mins i take it up and give it him at lunch instead and seems to work most of the time

coffeetofunction · 12/09/2022 17:00

Is she a jack Russell?

SpoonyMcFace · 12/09/2022 17:08

My dog is a terrible eater. I've had her for six years and she pretty much has to be cajoled into eating every meal.

She's been on every food there is and it took me years to find a kibble she would eat which she has with food I make myself in the slow cooker on top.

A vet at Butterbox told me she had probably been puppy farmed and removed from her mother too early. My dog, not the vet.

No, she’s a beautiful but diddy cavapoo.

She only weighs 1.3kg at 12 weeks so she’s very small.

Interesting. She wasn’t from a puppy farm and she was 9 weeks when I got her.

Shes probably just a fussy cow 😅

We put a little bit of hot water on his kibble to let the flavour out - cool it before letting ddog eat it obviously. I used to mix a bit of natural live yogurt in too. If you're a member of Costco they do packs of salmon oil and we put some squirts of this on his kibble - he loves it and he's got a really shiny soft coat. Try the occasional raw egg or sardines mixed in

Rollingdownland · 12/09/2022 19:14

They will eat it when they're hungry. Also, have you tried other types of dry food?

BeansOnToast32 · 12/09/2022 19:36

My 10wk old pup won't eat out of a bowl! No idea why because she did with the breeder. I discovered she will eat off of the kitchen floor so I put all of her dry biscuits into a kong and she hoovers them up as they fall out 😂 if your pup will eat kibble as treats then I'd try that.

She's hand fed one of her meals a day so that I can use that time to teach her things.

mountainsunsets · 12/09/2022 20:10

I'm of the belief that plain biscuits are a very boring diet for a dog. They don't smell very interesting, they're dry and they're all the same texture and flavour.

If you're going to feed kibble, I would be adding things to it. Wet food, doggy gravy, sardines, chicken, warm water, a raw egg, the spring water from a tin of tuna etc.

The Lily's Kitchen ones are Chicken and Salmon Flavour.

Iv tried mixing it with wet and water and she still doesn’t try it.

Il try the egg though. I didn’t know about that one.

I hate tuna so won’t be buying that 😂

Iv tried 3 different types so far.

I think I can get my partner to join the puppy club and then il get another type for free and one with 50% off so il grab a couple more.

My boys were fussy eaters but both loved Millie's wolfheart kibble. Also you could pour a bit of bone broth on to entice him

Hauntedmaison · 12/09/2022 21:09

Some kibble can be really hard for young pups to bite, try skinners they are tiny triangles or canagan do a small dog version as do barking heads and More

try and get a sample so you don’t have to commit to a whole bag

StarDolphins · 12/09/2022 21:12

My dog finds dry food boring I think so I mix chicken pieces from Aldi in & he eats it!

noclothesinbed · 12/09/2022 21:19

Try soaking it in hot water for an hour before feeding. It may be too hard for her to crunch
