How to get pup to eat dry kibble/food?

TwinkleChristmas · 12/09/2022 14:05

Pup is 12 weeks. We got her 3 weeks ago.

She came to us on wet food and I would prefer she was on dry.

She won’t eat dry food at all, so far Iv bought royal canin, lilys, Ava and she would rather starve then eat any of it.

Any tricks or tips on how to get her to eat it?

Iv tried using hot water to mush it down but still nothing.

This. Would you like to eat a bowl of processed dry biscuit, every day of your life? Have you seen how they make it? It doesn't look one bit appetising. I use it as a mixer with "Butternut" which my boy loves and his coat and condition has never been better.

I already answered this. I didn’t mean exclusively eat kibble. I’d like her to eat both.
So was asking for tips on how to get her to eat it.

You did state you wanted dry and there was no mention of mixed. I asked why earlier. Is this your first?

Mine was the same and no better at 1 ! We put kibble down in the morning, and give her wet at night
Even the wet she goes off after a few days so we have to rotate brands... she is a whippet and looks like a RSPCA case after 2 days on hunger strike... she is just a fussy arse ! ... if you can afford it natures variety do freeze dried meat pellet things .. so it's dry and stores like kibble but easier to eat.. we thought that had cracked it and were resigned to remortgaging to feed it but she's gone off that too !

I will look into the freeze dried stuff. Iv never heard of it before.

My pup sounds like your dog… she doesn’t seem to want to eat anything for more then a couple of days before she starts turning her noise up.

It’s a shame as I have loads of Bella & duke in the freezer in all the flavours she’s now rejecting 🤣🤣🤣

I use Butternut and have recommended it to everyone I know and their dogs all love it too.

Email Platinum, tell them about your issue and ask if they'll send you some wee sample bags. It's moist, not dry, and dogs do seem to love it.
Thanks. Sent them a email 😀"

Another vote for platinum, it actually smells like human food. My terrier loved the Iberico and Greens.

On page one I mentioned I mixed it already and it hadn’t worked.

If you keep changing it you’ll cause issues for her tummy, pick a good wet/dry or combo and stick to it. Soak it, scatter the kibble, use it to train, put it in kongs mixed with wet but if you’re consistent she’ll eat. Our dog isn’t food driven so meals aren’t interesting for him. But we’ve stuck to our guns tried not to change brands etc too often, he gets dry with very moist tasty wet mixed though a while before and he eats it fine has put on weight as he was quite a skinny retriever, and looks great. He’s intolerant to chicken/poultry so eliminate anything which might cause upset to her tummy. In 3 weeks she’s been on a number of foods, hopefully she will start to just eat but see your vet if it continues.

I grew up with Labrador’s…. There was never ever any food left in the bowl with them around 😂

It's the poodle in her being fussy! Grin
You could try Piccolo. It's made by Canagan, and aimed at smaller, fussy dogs and has 75% meat in it. Makes it more appealing for fusspots and the extra protein levels helps smaller dogs with faster metabolisms.

You're unlikely to get free samples of kibbles like More but Pets Corner have a 100% money back guarantee if she doesn't get on with any kibble you buy. They sell Piccolo and Canagan.
Failing that, you could try something like Boil and Broth. It's a ready made broth you can put on kibble. It comes frozen - defrost it and then re-freeze into ice cube trays and defrost one at a time to put on her kibble. They have some free samples on their website.

I think a combo of both kibble and wet food is ideal for dogs. Best of both worlds and a wet only diet can be less ideal for their teeth (unless they also have lots of chews/antlers etc to rub away plaque build up).

It does sound like she's doing a good job of training you to service her whims!

I would second Nature's Variety! I have a cavapoo too (yours is so sweet!). Having tried many kibbles the natures variety kibble is his favourite, we think it is because of the sweet potato in it and quality. If you buy the freeze dried pellets too and crush it and mix it in it makes it much tastier for them! He loves them. They are for adult dogs tho so we just use it as a supplement to make it more tasty rather as the main meal. Some days we do this, on other days we will use pre-made mashed sweet potato to mix in (he LOVES that and means he eats all the kibble). The other brand he has enjoyed mixed in is 'pets love fresh' - which is fresh and cooked wet food (it is not in a can or preserved). He always eats his whole dinner up when we mix that in and you can buy a handy tube container to store it in on the website. It is the one food he wimpers for in excitement!

This has become our technique :) sometimes he'll pick out the good bits and leave some kibbble. But we find if we leave the kibble out he will snack on it later in the day.

We basically use kibble as the main staple and rotate the extras to keep it interesting.

We have tried Ava, Lily's kitchen (both wet and dry - he turned his nose up at the wet!), amongst a few other taster packs.

I feel your pain tho! Part of it is also having a few days of not changing it as they always hold out for something bettter/new. They will never starve themselves, and eventually will eat. But it is nice to have some things you know they like :)

Il grab some sardines when I’m next out shopping.

I’m guessing it’s not the ones ‘in tomato sauce’ though… what would they normally come in?

Sorry if that sounds dim but I don’t eat any kind of fish from a tin so I’m unsure what it would normally come in… Brine?

It comes in oil, we have bought the ones in tomato too with no ill effect. There is mackerel too (same can) and I think its that one that's slightly cheaper, our dogs like both (from aldi).

LaTangerina · 21/09/2022 06:12

I would possibly switch kibble too, if you've not already done that, I've one dog that's incredibly fussy & won't eat some kibbles at all. I'll get the name of the one we use now shortly when I get up, it's not a hugely expensive one.

nonstoprenovation · 21/09/2022 06:31

@Drivebye it's early and i just laughed at you stuffing your king!!

LaTangerina · 21/09/2022 09:06

Its Clinivet kibble we use just checked, from Petmania.

She’s a F1B cavapoo too so she’s 75% poodle 😂 extra fussy.

I will look into your suggestions. I like the sound of the bone broth in general so will get some of that.

What can I say I’m a soft touch for this face😅😆

I will look into the other suggestions.

Iv purchased a bag of the freeze dried stuff by natures variety.

Iv made some sweet potato mash and will add that to the kibble tonight and see if she eats it.

When I get a chance tonight il look at let’s corner & petmania

Thanks for everyone’s help. Here’s a picture of her worn out from the garden as everyone loves puppy pics 😆

Il probably be back telling you all how I’m grinding up her kibble next week as a last resort😂

Sorry, I only just seen this and I just wrote a paragraph and MN ate it😅

She still isn’t eating dry though.
Iv tried a few other brands, she doesn’t even attempt it after a sniff. although I did try tails as they had a free trial, she loved the wet but didn’t touch the dry.
In addition to all the above.. Iv tried sardines, sweet potato, mince mixed in, the freeze dried stuff.
Iv got some boil and broth on the way(should of been here by now so no idea where it’s too).
I also have Clinivet & Piccilo on the way. They will the last ones I buy before I give up.

The only thing that remotely works is crushing it up and mixing it with wet. I can’t crush up too much though otherwise she won’t eat the wet.

As a last resort today Iv only put dry down for breakfast and il only put dry down tonight. I’m hoping she will eat some if she gets hungry enough.

Iv tried all the attached pic brands but currently sticking to wainwrights at the moment as it’s the easiest to crush and smallest 😊

Blimey I’m not sure your quest to get kibble into the pup is going to work out! Sounds as stubborn as my dog.

I think sometimes you have to accept that you’re onto a loser!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/10/2022 17:12

Yeah my dog is fussy like this.

He will eat a very high meat intent kibble if he's absolutely starving but otherwise much prefers soft food.

I leave the kibble down all the time and give him half a tin of Butchers food once a day (he's a small dog) he will occasionally go and eat a few biscuits in the evening if he's still hungry.
