How to get pup to eat dry kibble/food?

TwinkleChristmas · 12/09/2022 14:05

Pup is 12 weeks. We got her 3 weeks ago.

She came to us on wet food and I would prefer she was on dry.

She won’t eat dry food at all, so far Iv bought royal canin, lilys, Ava and she would rather starve then eat any of it.

Any tricks or tips on how to get her to eat it?

Iv tried using hot water to mush it down but still nothing.

I have a similarly fussy cavapoo - I think it's a breed thing. Try and mix it up with different meals. We use salmon oil mixed in with kibble and some wet food. Sometimes some cooked chicken as a treat (mixed with kibble). A scrambled egg for breakfast. I asked a similar question on here and was given this advice. Also if the dog doesn't eat the food within 15 mins, take it away and try again later.

Thanks..

il buy some salmon oil and try mixing that with the hot water and kibble and see if that entices her.

I had this and almost changed. Vet said don't, or they learn they can just refuse food and will get something else and it's a bad habit. Which surprised me.
Eats it now, just not a ravager like my previous dog was.

My puppy went off her dry food. I ended up grinding her kibble with a mortar and pestle and mixing it with chicken, rice and vegetables. She eats it all now.

Things we do for our dogs!

I may try this.

You can mix with other stuff without having to grind it - works for us.

GiantCheeseMonster · 16/09/2022 22:24

Try Wolfworthy. It smells so nice, I’ve considered having a nibble.

Imsupertangirl · 16/09/2022 22:28

Can you not put pup on freeze dried raw? They come in dry pellets but have flavour and goodness. Which kibble doesn’t.
Dogs have so little choice and autonomy in their day - the least we can do is feed them food they enjoy and that has interesting flavour.

FiddleMyFig · 17/09/2022 06:02

@HandbagsnGladrags i tried mixing her kibble in with other food, she would just eat around the kibble, so I had to resort to grinding it. I’m going to have to invest in an electric grinder though, I have 20kgs of it left 😊 yes the things we do for our dogs!

MrsClarkandPercy · 17/09/2022 06:29

Mix it with some plain rice and chicken/carrots/green beans.

Drivebye · 17/09/2022 07:15

How about soaking the kibble in hot water until it goes soft and then mixing it with something else. I stuff my king with soaked kibble and sweet potato.

AlwaysGinPlease · 17/09/2022 07:24

Why do you prefer dry food only rather than wet or at least a mix of the two?

adding salmon oil

all no goes 😂 so will try bashing it up tonight and adding it to wet.

Email Platinum, tell them about your issue and ask if they'll send you some wee sample bags. It's moist, not dry, and dogs do seem to love it.

Mindymomo · 20/09/2022 17:13

You could try some goats milk in with food. My puppy didn’t like just dry food on it’s own but would eat if mixed with Butchers tinned puppy food and a little goats milk. He’s now on Butternut box frozen cooked food, which I mix with dry food.

Didiplanthis · 20/09/2022 17:15

Mine was the same and no better at 1 ! We put kibble down in the morning, and give her wet at night
Even the wet she goes off after a few days so we have to rotate brands... she is a whippet and looks like a RSPCA case after 2 days on hunger strike... she is just a fussy arse ! ... if you can afford it natures variety do freeze dried meat pellet things .. so it's dry and stores like kibble but easier to eat.. we thought that had cracked it and were resigned to remortgaging to feed it but she's gone off that too !

abovedecknotbelow · 20/09/2022 18:32

Why do you want him ti eat exclusively dry? If they don't like it they don't like it. Ddog hasn't eaten kibble for years. And he wouldn't eat it if he was hungry, he'd just scavenge anything else he could get hold of.

We put a bit of hot water in to soften it, then a half can of sardines (maybe less if your dog is a pup), mix it through.
The sardines out of aldi are cheap enough.

I re read my OP… I didn’t mean I wanted her to only eat dry but I would prefer it if she ate a mixture of dry and some wet.

Il grab some sardines when I’m next out shopping.

I’m guessing it’s not the ones ‘in tomato sauce’ though… what would they normally come in?

Sorry if that sounds dim but I don’t eat any kind of fish from a tin so I’m unsure what it would normally come in… Brine?

I did try mixing it with some puppy milk but she walked away from it and after 10 mins of it floating around it looked minging 🫣

You can get the sardines in spring water, the ones in brine would have too much salt in them.

This. Would you like to eat a bowl of processed dry biscuit, every day of your life? Have you seen how they make it? It doesn't look one bit appetising. I use it as a mixer with "Butternut" which my boy loves and his coat and condition has never been better.
