UPDATE: Help! Have been dithering a week over naming this dog!

Thank you to all those who replied to my previous post.

Kaia/Kaya was the most popular choice, however I have had to eliminate it for personal reasons. At the time I posted, I had forgotten that many years ago when I lived in Japan I had wanted to use Kaya as my daughter’s name. My MIL nixed it; it was, combined with our surname, an “unlucky” kanji stroke count according to her. We ended up opting for the ubiquitous (well, in Japan) Kana with my MIL’s choice of kanji. Ironically, ten days later my daughter passed away…It seems my love/hate relationship with Kaya is likely the reason I have been hopelessly mired in name-limbo. Its various spellings only complicate this choice so I have moved on…

Here is my refreshed list:

Aubrey: "elf ruler"

Aurelia -> call name = Auri/ Aurie; Latin, "the golden one"

Ava = Hebrew, Latin or Germanic "life; bird; water, island"

Evie = Diminutive of Eva/Eve "life"

Leal = "loyal"

Orly = Irish, "golden princess" + the airport in France

Octavia -> call name = Tavi; Latin, "eighth"

Vivi = "life"

Xanthe = Greek, "golden, yellow"

Zenobia = Greek "force of Zeus"→ call name = Zen in the hope that as she ages she acquires a calmer perspective.

P.S. She is a young, Anatolian Shepherd x Pyrenees cross who likes to swim!

Vivi or Xanthe seem appropriate.

Sorry for the loss of your baby daughter 💐

Soubriquet · 10/09/2022 16:42

What about Kiki?

Turnedacorner · 10/09/2022 16:46

She looks like a Xanthe 💜

Phillipa12 · 10/09/2022 16:52

Leal and then Orly are my favourites.

JustlookingNotbuying · 10/09/2022 16:53

We have just rescued a dog and had I had Zinnia, Tawny or Aubrey lined up for a girl. As it turned out a boy dog came our way and we like his given name so have kept it.

Monkeytapper · 10/09/2022 16:54

Mimi

Yupsuuuure · 10/09/2022 16:54

Xanthe is great.

KittyCatsby · 10/09/2022 16:54

Aqua = Water

Monkeytapper · 10/09/2022 16:56

Reeva

means ‘River’

JustlookingNotbuying · 10/09/2022 16:57

If she loves to swim what about a sea based name like Pearl?

WaltzingWaters · 10/09/2022 17:00

Orly

Pixiedust1234 · 10/09/2022 17:03

Oh.....if its on meanings only then damn...I would love an elf ruling dog 😂

Two things first. Does anybody in your family have a problem saying any of those words? There's a couple there that I wouldn't be able to say (think stammer but only with a small percentage of words so nobody actually knows I have one).

The other one is. Have you tried to call her in the garden with any of these names? Maybe she will respond to one herself? We had a list for our cat. She only responded to one so that became her name. She always responded to it from day one..even though she was a cat who refused to respond to most things 😂

Otherwise um... Ava seems to suit her the most.

HeadacheEarthquake · 10/09/2022 17:07

Orly!!! It's really spot on, not too OTT, romantic but still cute and easy for people to say when they get to scratch her adorable head

TQIDLLTK · 10/09/2022 17:08

using the anagram option...

Lanna Liato - Lanna or Li for short (depending which she best answers to)

Tian Nan Loa - Tia or Nan for short

Lianna Tao - Li or Tao for short

Citygirlrurallife · 11/09/2022 09:06

Definitely Xanthe from your list (was funnily enough one of our top three choices for our DS if he’d been a girl) - she really suits it

so sorry for the loss of your daughter

incidently our puppy is called Haku, love it when people choose meaningful names, our family is obsessed with Studio Ghibli and have visited Japan, he’s the River Spirit in Spirited Away
