Someone keeps asking me to breed my dog with theirs

I have a 10months old pup and there's a mum on the school run who every time I see her keeps asking if we can mate out puppies when old enough.

Never in a million years I would and I keep saying no but clearly she's not getting the message.

What can I say that's short and to the point?

Her bitch is 6 month and a huge lurcher (she thinks) and I have a tiny Italian greyhound, he's KC etc if that matters.

I was tempted to just say backyard breeding is not ethical, but I feel like I want to be armed with a few facts as she will challenge me.

Say he is booked into be neutered.

KittyCatsby · 09/09/2022 16:13

You just tell her it's not something you would be inclined to do.

Pacca · 09/09/2022 16:14

Well, you'll be having your dog neutered as soon as possible, won't you?

I wouldn't bother with facts. Facts don't work on people like that.

LolaButt · 09/09/2022 16:15

Well, you can lie or be direct?

Lie “Sounds like an interesting idea but my dog has a congenital heart defect which we wouldn’t want passing onto puppies would we?”

Direct “I don’t want to breed my dog. I don’t agree with breeding crossbreeds in a world where rescues are fit to bursting and breeding a litter like this would not better either breed”

WhenDovesFly · 09/09/2022 16:17

"Sorry Sandra, but what part of 'No' do you not understand?"

Seriously though, tell her you plan to have your dog neutered.

Brideandpredjudice · 09/09/2022 16:18

Say no. That's all, just keep saying no.

FijiArtesian · 09/09/2022 16:32

Yes I'm. I need to woman up and just be firm. I don't have to explain anything to her really do I?

Breeding from a dog can really change their temperament. It can cause a dog to want to start looking for other bitches and isn’t really fair if you only plan on doing it once. You could tell her this, you could tell her you are going to neuter you boy, or you could just laugh and ask her what on earth kind of puppies such a mix would produce and is she actually bonkers?

Aside from the sensible stuff, surely the logistics of this mate would be “challenging”?

Reallyreallyborednow · 09/09/2022 18:25

This is a thing.

i have a toy breed which is a bit runty and turned out smaller than normal.

i got a lot of people out on walks asking if he was a “teacup” and suggesting puppies with their (usually white fluffy) bitch would be cute/gorgeous/££££

i had him neutered earlier than planned due to him needing anaesthesia for something else. That was the only thing that shut them up.

OnaBegonia · 09/09/2022 18:25

She 'thinks' her dog is a lurcher?
Ffs she sounds like a moron, lurcher are in of the most prevalent breeds in rescue, I doubt pups would sell.
Be blunt and tell her backyard breeding is a blight on dog rescue.

TheUsualChaos · 09/09/2022 18:29

What an idiot. Clearly she just wants to use her poor dog as a cash cow. Sadly she will just find someone elses dog and get her way.

FijiArtesian · 09/09/2022 18:31

Yeh she said we can split the profits. I'm always so taken back I don't say much other than a polite laugh. Then I get home and I'm fuming. It goes against everything I think.

Tell her yours is gay

She sounds thick enough to believe it

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 10/09/2022 16:55

Offer to help her with basic comprehension of the English language as she must obvious struggle as you’ve kept saying no.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/09/2022 17:01

I was tempted to just say backyard breeding is not ethical

You should say that - assuming she knows the meaning of the word 'ethical'.

Spanielsarepainless · 10/09/2022 18:15

My puppy has an endorsement on his KC registration so any puppies can't be registered unless he and the bitch have had a full range of health and DNA tests. I appreciate any puppies would be crossbred and not registered, but just keep saying no and if she persists tell her she is now harassing you.

Gingersay · 10/09/2022 23:22

We kept getting this with our dog, as soon as he was old enough we got him neutered, we still get stopped but it's an easy answer.
