Matted ear

I hadn't realised that my shih tzu had a bit of matted fur on his ear. It's tangled at the root and I can't brush it out . How can I get it out? Or do I need to cut it? He's got the groomers but not for 2 weeks.

My long haired dog has this occasionally I just cut it out. I suspect the groomers would do the same. I always ask the grinders to cut out knots rather than try and brush them out - less time and discomfort for my dog.

Had a spaniel that would get tangled fur, used to just cut it out but careful how close to the ear.

I do a mix of cutting it out and using a brush called the coat king to rake through any remaining matted base of knots after they’ve been trimmed. This does the trick

Yeh I'm nervous to cut it cos it's so close to the skin. He didn't like me trying to brush it so I stopped very quickly!

Do you have a link for that brush?

Just cut as close as you feel comfortable and then you can probably tease the rest out

He won't like you brushing it as matts are incredibly painful for dogs.

I would see if the groomer can bring the appointment forward as the longer you leave it, the more painful it will get and it can get infected.

Thank you yes I've just messaged the groomer to try and change his appointment to as soon as she can do it and I'm going to leave it to her.
