A big dog with the personality of a golden retriever?

I’d love a golden retriever but DH likes big dogs and says he wants something bigger.

Are there any big breeds with the personality of a golden?

My neighbour has a Labernese (cross between a Lab and a Bernese mountain dog). He’s gorgeous and is going to be the size of a small horse when he’s fully grown.

You're talking about a golden retriever

Honestly, anything bigger and you're into giant breed territory which comes with a whole new set of problems - bills, food and insurance will sky rocket, you'll need to think about buying a new car to fit the dog in and they don't live as long either.

Stick with a Golden, they're fantastic dogs and popular for a reason.

By “a big dig” does he actually mean “a giant breed”? That’s a whole different ball game.

A golden retriever can be big, but if you want huge then a Newfoundland. They are adorable but sometimes they gradually eat your sofa, and if they see water it can be difficult to hold them back.

Boxers are similarly goofy, and probably a bit bigger.

How big is he wanting?

Who will look after, train and generally be responsible for the dog? You or your DH? Because he sounds like he doesn’t really know much about dogs… If you’re the driving force behind getting a dog then you should insist on the type of dog you want.

I told him golden retrievers were big! Especially a male! He seems to think they’re spaniel sized. He wants something the size of a German shepherd/Dobermann but GR are a similar size right?

I will be doing 100% of the training and 95% of the walks so I want something biddable 😂 and good with kids, can be allowed off lead with training without worrying about it eating the local children 😂

I love newfoundlands but have heard they can be stubborn and difficult to train?

You want a Golden Retriever.

Has your DH even seen one? And if he is only going to be 5% caring for it, why does he get a deciding vote?

Bernese Mountain dogs have a life expectancy of only around 6/7 years and have extremely high levels of health problems. Have you looked at a Bouvier des Flanders - giant dogs but calm and lazy at home. I’m redo my loyal to their families and highly intelligent.

Google pictures of Goldens side by side with GSD and similarly Goldens by Spaniels and show him. Golden Retrievers are gorgeous, large but have a good life span, unlike their giant counterparts.
