Puppy breeder

Sorry, this is just a vent.
6 months after losing DDog, I started looking for a puppy. Found a breeder reasonably close by, with an available litter. I went to view on Saturday. Breeder told me she was keeping a pup but hadn’t decided which one yet. She told me I was first to see them and would get my choice after her. I contacted her today, she has chosen the bitch that would have been my first choice but fine. I then said I was interested in one of the dogs, she told me she had sold him! I said I would think about the 2 pups that were left and would call her back. I called back about 10 minutes later to ask if I could back to see the remaining g dog, at which point she told me that he is reserved for a viewing on Saturday. I asked what had happened to me getting first refusal, she said I hadn’t contacted her within 24 hours of viewing - I said she told me she would let me know when she had decided on which pup she was keeping.
I am so upset right now, it took me a long time to decide to get another dog, I am really unhappy with this breeder.

So don’t get your puppy from her.

ImJustNotMeAnymore · 23/08/2022 19:17

Walk away and find a properly reputable breeder. What breed are you looking for?
A family member was conned by a bad breeder simply because he wouldn't ask for help. The dog breeding community may look big from the number of available pups online but if you do a bit of asking about and some proper digging you will find the pup for you. Good luck and don't be buying a sob story.

What about a rescue? So many dogs are literally dying in small cages waiting for a new home.

If you saw the way some rescues treat and store their dogs you'd never go near. It's heartbreaking as they get away with things licensed and registered breeders never would. Rescue places need as much research done by a potential new owner as they would for a breeder.
Honestly if you saw behind some doors you'd cry for the dogs.

A reputable breeder does not have dogs available with no wait list. Walk away.

That's not actually true. I know several good breeders who do not maintain waiting lists.

On the other hand, none of them would behave like this one.

iamme21 · 23/08/2022 22:51

The breeder is kennel club accredited. There is one pup left in the litter but I am walking away and will continue to look. I have looked at rescues but near me all the available dogs are bull dogs, Staffies etc and I am not interested in those breeds.

Adopt don't shop

Bananarama21 · 24/08/2022 11:55

We choose our puppy straight away and reserved by paying a deposit, ironically she was thinking of keeping her but we reserved her. The fact you didn't offer a deposit would suggest you hadn't reserved a pup in the first place. This is common practice so you know your reserved the pup and the breeder doss have time wasters.

Christmasiscominghohoho · 24/08/2022 12:01

Sounds like a communication error, she told you she would let you know and probably forgot and waited for you to contact her.

My dogs have always chose me or found me. Personally if the breeder is not KC reg walk away or go to a rescue.

Thanks all. Fit those saying adopt/rescue, I have tried this and can’t find a suitable dog. Due to allergies in the house we can only have certain breeds.
The breeder wouldn’t let us reserve a pup until she had selected the pup she was keeping.
I have found another accredited breeder with a litter available, going to view on Saturday, so hopefully will have a new addition to the family soon.

The best/most reputable breeders I know don't take deposits, because they want people to be able to change their mind right up until the time they would take their pup home (and obviously after) without feeling they are in any way tied in to a deposit or that they would lose money if they changed their mind. So not all breeders expect, or want a deposit.

W@iamme21 what breed are you wanting to get?

Str8talker · 24/08/2022 20:07

Take a few days to consider the ethics of a breeder. Bringing more dogs into the world when there are so many in rescue centres is sick, honestly it is. How would you feel about human breeders, selling babies for adoption?

KC accredited means nothing. Walk away. This happened to me- by the time I got my pup he was the only one left. I love him to bits but he’s had massive health issues his whole life. My vet said that records are easily falsified- and all sorts go on.

I would also say get a rescue, but if you still want a pup go elsewhere.

greywinds · 24/08/2022 20:33

Good luck with the next breeder! I've had two pups for two different breeds from excellent dog breeders and had zero issues - both pups were the last or second to last left but we researched the breeders, the breeders were very well known and established and both dogs are brilliant (well one sadly on the rainbow bridge now).

Nice to see some utterly intemperate ranting.

iamme21 · 24/08/2022 20:47

I have high hopes for the next breeder, communication is already much better!

Wolfiefan · 24/08/2022 20:52

KC reg or accredited really means VERY little. They don’t monitor breeders. They are just a money making machine.
Go through the breed club.

xalo · 24/08/2022 21:01

Good luck! Let us know how you get on!

Bloody phone!! SO cute!!

greywinds · 25/08/2022 07:34

I'd always look for a breeder engaged in the community for that breed, ideally someone who shows or where the dogs are still working if they're a working dog breed.
