Puppy breeder

Sorry, this is just a vent.
6 months after losing DDog, I started looking for a puppy. Found a breeder reasonably close by, with an available litter. I went to view on Saturday. Breeder told me she was keeping a pup but hadn’t decided which one yet. She told me I was first to see them and would get my choice after her. I contacted her today, she has chosen the bitch that would have been my first choice but fine. I then said I was interested in one of the dogs, she told me she had sold him! I said I would think about the 2 pups that were left and would call her back. I called back about 10 minutes later to ask if I could back to see the remaining g dog, at which point she told me that he is reserved for a viewing on Saturday. I asked what had happened to me getting first refusal, she said I hadn’t contacted her within 24 hours of viewing - I said she told me she would let me know when she had decided on which pup she was keeping.
I am so upset right now, it took me a long time to decide to get another dog, I am really unhappy with this breeder.

Take a few days to consider the ethics of a breeder. Bringing more dogs into the world when there are so many in rescue centres is sick, honestly it is. How would you feel about human breeders, selling babies for adoption?

Did you not read the OP's earlier post? Many dogs in rescue are not suitable for family homes, and she is limited in which breeds she can have.

Dogs from responsible breeders very rarely end up in rescue, due to return clauses in the contract. I have known at least four dogs go back to the breeder - two via contract, one because it had gone to a neighbour who then fell ill, and one that the breeder went and got because he was so incensed at how the dog was being treated.

And finally, dogs are not people.

The first breeder is engaged with the breed community and shows their dogs. I have also found out that they then sell bitches on when done with breeding.
The breeder I’m going to see at the weekend actually looks much better, and in the information they have provided say they keep all of their dogs until the end of their days ❤️
I have a much better feeling about this
@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination it is a wire I’m looking at

Ha @iamme21 when we started looking for our first dog, we asked for retired breeding dogs as we'd thought an older dog might be a good first dog but we were quickly told that she had 9 dogs because she wouldn't do that! (She had plenty of space for them)!. Good luck!

It's not especially uncommon for breeders to sell on breeding bitches once they have finished breeding/showing them, in the same way they sell on pups/younger dogs that don't turn out good enough quality. Whilst it's something I wouldn't do myself, if people are hevaily involved in the breed and showing, realistically, they can only have so many dogs and look after and exercise them properly without having to kennel them and/or hire staff. The dogs really don't care where they are and most go to carefully vetted, lovely pet homes after neutering and it's a lovely life for them.

Good breeders don’t get as much money as they can out of a bitch before selling her to make space for the next cash cow @SpanishWaterDog
Uncommon it may not be. Ethical and acceptable it isn’t

That isn't necessarily what is happening however, is it? Most people I know who breed never breed the maximum number of litters allowed by the KC, in fact, usually far less and certainly don't see their dogs as 'cash cows'. Not to mention that anyone who is going to the expense of showing their dogs and only breeding the odd litter is unlikely to cover their own costs, let alone be making any money....

iamme21 · 25/08/2022 20:40

I seem to have whipped up a bit of a storm here!
I understand that those that show dogs have a different viewpoint. However although I am looking to buy a pedigree dog, this dog will purely ba a much loved pet.
I get the impression from the breeder of the litter I’m going to see this weekend, that their dogs are also pets, and I personally feel more comfortable with that.

@SpanishWaterDog if they aren’t purely breeding for profit then they won’t sell on ex breeding bitches. Why would they?
@iamme21 show or pet I would always go through the breed club. See how many dogs they are licensed to keep and how often they register a litter.

iamme21 · 25/08/2022 21:30

I have checked the breed club and can’t find a list of breeders.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 25/08/2022 21:45

@iamme21 just contact the secretary or similar. They won’t publish a list (theft etc!) but will steer you right. Soooooo many awful breeders. Good luck.

iamme21 · 25/08/2022 21:59

That’s great advice, thanks

Good luck @iamme21 honestly it’s so worth waiting. The breed club can also advise if any specialist tests are needed on parents.

Well the people I know who do it keep their dogs in their houses, as pets. So I guess there’s a limit to how many dogs people can keep inside and if they’re really want to continue trying to improve the breed and not let their line die out, then they have to decide whether to kennel their dogs or rehome some to vetted pet homes/family members etc.

as I said, it’s not for me, but ultimately, that means that at some stage I’ll have to withdraw from showing my dogs and breeding if I ever choose to do so as I won’t have any dogs of the correct age. If everyone did that in breeds with smaller numbers though, what would happen?

Wolfiefan · 27/08/2022 13:39

If they only breed to improve their breed and keep their lines enough then they won’t reach that point.

Quick update - I am getting a puppy. Really happy with the breeder and their set up. Saw mum and dad, in a home environment, puppies all really healthy. Someone is viewing tomorrow, but as they had enquired before me they get first choice. I have a preference and a reserve, but to be honest I would have been happy with all/any of them. Will find out tomorrow and will
post a picture then.

He’s very sweet.

“Due to allergies in the house we can only have certain breeds”

Out of sheer nosiness, just because it seems an obscure breed to know someone isn’t allergic to... how do you know they’re not allergic to fix terriers? I’ve met people that are ok with greyhounds and not other dogs, but they much more common so easier to work that out.
