Letting puppy in garden prior to 2nd vax

Hi all, we brought our new pup home today, very excited!
We are a bit confused about whether or not pup can go out in our garden or not. Our breeder said not to risk it until a week post 2nd vax (he is getting his second this week) but other uk dog websites we’ve seen have suggested if your garden is enclosed and free from other dogs and foxes (which ours is, small, 6ft fence, no foxes seen in years) then you can let them outside.

This is more confusing than having a baby and getting lots of conflicting advice!

Views and thoughts appreciated.

As long as it's a private garden that no other dogs can access, it's fine Smile

Hobbitlover · 20/08/2022 15:59

Totally fine.

Floralnomad · 20/08/2022 16:02

Totally ok and don’t be tempted to use puppy pads for house training as it confuses the dog .

Puppypower83 · 20/08/2022 16:43

Thanks guys! I don’t remember being this stressed bringing babies home!

We did, and we took him out in the car with us when we went food shopping etc.
Enjoy puppyhood!!!

Yep, and he can go out being carried off the ground. It’s good for socialisation.

Really depends on what wildlife can access your garden. Hedgehogs, foxes, squirrels and rats carry lepto. Most animals can really. It's passed in urine and can survive on surfaces for upto 8 months. Prob best ask your vet if you're unsure.

EdithStourton · 20/08/2022 19:21

Personally I think that the risks that go with keeping the puppy cooped up away from all the things he should be experiencing are much greater than the risks of lepto and parvo.

I've known multiple dogs, including my own, who have had access to rural gardens, farmyards and enclosed fields as very young puppies. Of the >100 I know who have had puppyhoods like this, I have known only one puppy fall ill and die (and it could have picked up parvo at the vets, come to that - unlikely, but possible). The other side of the coin is that if you don't let the puppy out, you are missing out on a huge opportunity to socialise your dog in what is a very short window, and poor socialisation bring a whole host of issues along with it.

Don't take stupid risks, stay away from unvaccinated dogs and anywhere they're likely to be, but do let your puppy experience the outdoors.

Thanks all. We’ve been out in our very enclosed tiny garden and all poos and wees (bar one) have been in the garden since last night so that alone is great and seems less confusing for him than the puppy pads that were hit and miss.

Will take him out in the car and carry him down the high street too.

We brought a puppy home yesterday.
We have let it out into the garden (our own enclosed garden)

Puppypower83 · 21/08/2022 15:11

How was your first night @Christmasiscominghohoho ?

Amazing @Puppypower83

We took her outside for one last wee about 11.30 and then put her in her crate.
She didn’t cry at all!
I was expecting her to cry and wake me up to use the bathroom but nothing. I woke up at 4am and she still wasn’t crying so I went downstairs and took her in the garden again (her bed was dry) to wee which she did. I put her back in her crate and she whined for 2 mins and then silence.
I woke up again at 6.45 and went downstairs and that was the first night over.

This is my first dog and I was really impressed. I’m not sure if it’s normal or a fluke so we will see how tonight goes! I have ordered her a snuggle puppy today of Amazon as I think it will just be nicer for her.

How was your pups first night?
