European Passport

So we are going to France soon and have just been to the Vet and got a very expensive health certificate. The Vet advised us that if we can to get a EU passport for the dog to make it easier and a lot cheaper and that's what we want to do.

I am from a Scandinavian country but we never take the dog there as it's too complicated. My husband on the other side is from Northern Ireland so it would be easy to go to Ireland to do it but my question is, how easy is it? Are vets in EU countries happy to do this even if you are not registered with them?

Has anyone got an EU pass for their UK dog?

Consider that you need to make sure you're going abroad often enough to keep your rabies vaccination up to date over there. And some places in Europe only give a vaccine that lasts 1 year so you need to go a maximum of 12 months between visits, and coordinate getting a rabies booster in whatever country you are going to.

Personally having looked into it, we decided it wasn't worth it for us. We may go once a year max so it will cost £99 for a health certificate each time but we don't have to schedule visits around making sure her rabies vaccination doesn't expire. I'd say you need to be travelling multiple times a year for it to be worth it.

Thanks for your reply, we go to Northern Ireland twice a year and usually France once a year, so I think it may be worth it for us. Hopefully Ireland do rabies every 3 years

If you're on Facebook there is a group called Animal Health Certificate where you might find some advice on finding a vet in Ireland to issue. From reading there people seem to have mixed success in getting passports, either the vet won't issue, or issues and gets a detail wrong which makes them useless.
