What to do about the humping?

First time dog owner, male dog, nearly 7 months. He has just started humping one particular toy. I don't really want to encourage behaviour as I don't want him starting on people's legs/our furniture! Do you try and train it out of them? I know it's natural behaviour at this age, I just don't know what (if anything) to do about it.

Just remove the toy for a few months. You might find he diverts onto cushions etc so again keep them away from him for a bit.

Distract when he does it.

Often the humping starts when the nipping stops! Same reason for both over tired, over stimulated, so encourage chilled actvity or sleep

Oh I didn't know it was from over tiredness, I thought it was hormones. He does seem to be napping/sleeping less than he did when he was younger.

My in laws have a 6 year old jrt, he still tries to hump the cushions daily, usually when he gets excited about visitors arriving, full view in the middle of the livingroom. He was neutered years ago, so not likely hormonal.
