Split claw

Anyone had a dog with a split claw? I think our whippet split his claw in the woods yesterday. He's limping on it now. Should we try to bandage or put a plaster his claw to stop it splitting more? What would the vet do? Anyone with any experience of this?

We usually clip back split claws as the flap is painful.

Our Italian greyhound snapped his dew claw at the beach on holiday, it was still attached but flapping and bleeding. We took him to the vet and they cut it off gave us a bottle of hibiscrub and charged us £80. We were staying in rented caravan that which was brand new with cream carpets and sofas. We were worried he would catch it on something through the night and get blood all over the duvet. It had stopped bleeding by the time we got to the vets and they didn’t bandage him, just told us to keep it clean and bath it after being on the beach.

OK thanks. I'm not sure I've got the confidence to clip it myself in case it hurts even more...I'll try to get him to the vets tomorrow as we're supposed to be going on holiday with him on Wednesday.

Maybe you could try phoning a dog groomer to see if they would trim it for you? We were dreading the vet visit as he’s a bit of a wuss and we expected him to make a right drama. The vet took him out the room, got a nurse to hold him and whipped the nail off, never heard a peep! It was an expensive experience for a 2 min job!

I’d go to the vets tomorrow and in the meantime keep it clean . My dog has SLO so we have had a few split / lost nails .

Had this a while ago, we washed it in salt water daily and put a sock on in between, restricted walks and then took him to a dog groomer (fellow dog walker) who clipped it down and put something on it, can't remember the name now but it worked miracles and we didn't need to go to the Vets in the end. Hope you get it sorted

Salt water, don't bandage and go to the vets to get it clipped back not a groomers.
