It's lovely to see and read about the new puppies. This thread will probably be my last one too, as my pup is now 15 months old. I have enjoyed these threads so much, they are a great source of information and support.

My poor pup had to have stitches last week. When the vet said that exercise would have to be limited for at least 10 days, I braced myself for a difficult time. He is used to running about like a loon, swimming, playing with his dog pals, etc. I thought he'd be climbing the walls with short lead walks only. But actually, he has been very patient and calm for the past week. He is such a wonderful dog. I feel incredibly lucky to have him. 💕

Welcome @Sunflower07 i have the same question - we’ve had our puppy 10days and I’ve only left him a few minutes so far!

Riverlee · 22/09/2022 19:04

we’ve had RiverPup three weeks and haven’t left him at all. He sleeps okay-ish at night but we’ve not left him during the day (apart from when he’s asleep). That’s our next campaign.

CocoLady · 22/09/2022 23:04

Hi everyone can I join please ? I'm picking up my new puppy this weekend ☺️very excited but nervous. Family had dogs as a child but ive never owned one. I've got all the puppy stuff and bought a play pen a soft foldable one for puppy to sleep in my room with me at night! My question is as I have a child whose bedroom is
Next to mine..& il shut my door n hers, should I try n settle puppy a few times in the night if they cry as I'm expecting a few cries? As I know they will probably be scared etc. and how many times a night should I take them outside for a wee in the first few days/weeks? I've done my research but totally new to this ad you can tell ! Thankyou xx

Citygirlrurallife · 23/09/2022 07:26

Thankyou @Citygirlrurallife ! Soo cute ! How do you mean u messed up night time lol 😂
I am nervous but I think it's like bringing home a new born isn't it, y have to expect accidents and sleepless
Nights!
Most of my family are dead against me getting a dog as they keep
Saying it's too hard work 🙄

vestedinterests · 23/09/2022 09:21

Can I join pls? I am picking up my labrador puppy on the 1st and have a question about a crate. I am planning on getting the medium size for now and will replace it as he grows. Is the single door one ok or should I get the double door one?

peacypops · 23/09/2022 11:03

First time poster here. We are two weeks in with our almost 11 week old Labrador Monty. As a first time dog owner it's hard work (especially the chewing and trying to eat everything) but we love him lots and can't imagine him not being here now. He is sleeping fairly well and toilet training has been surprisingly easy so far. Bit the chewing and jumping at ankles is another thing!

@Riverlee i didn’t leave my pup for months as he got so distressed whenever I tried. It really stressed me out and I thought I’d messed it up but as he’s got older and more confident he’s absolutely fine being left. Can easily do 2 hours happily now

Citygirlrurallife · 23/09/2022 11:27

If we leave our puppy just in the main room he’s fine but he hates being left in the crate….

tizwozliz · 23/09/2022 12:42

@Riverlee - we also didn't really leave our pup much when younger. She's fine being left now.

Welcome @peacypops - Monty is very cute.

@vestedinterests - I think double door gives you some more options for positioning but depends on your house layout how important that is. You could also consider a larger crate and a divider. They really do grow astonishingly quickly.

Thanks @tizwozliz, we can only get medium for now as the breeder is 160 miles away from where we live and the medium one only just fits in the car

peacypops · 23/09/2022 13:19

We got a medium one for our new lab pub. We have placed it within a playpen so he has two areas (one to sleep in and one to chew toys and eat/drink in). If I pop out (max 30 mins) I can close the play pen but leave the crate open.

Riverlee · 24/09/2022 08:04

Can we talk about, ahem, poos. River Pups was quite solid at first, but recently have been soft, not loose, but soft.

Also, he’s gone from doing his business on the grass, to going on the patio/paved areas. Anyone else noticed a change? What could be causing the softer poos? Eating or chewing grass?

GuyFawkesDay · 24/09/2022 08:33

Mine sometimes uses the patio for a few days. I have no idea why! Which rinds me I need to disinfect it again today!

Soft poop could be eating more, have portions increased? Different treats? Mine also does adrenaline/exercise poops which are softer

Citygirlrurallife · 24/09/2022 08:44

No idea on the pops I’m afraid but I’d prob prefer them to use the patio as easier to clean?

crate training is horrid, he gets so distressed. For those of you that don’t use a crate, what is your set up for nights and when you leave them? I’m thinking of cordoning off our living room as his safe space, have his bed in there - it’s already totally puppy proofed. We can move the crate there in case he decides he does like it but otherwise what would be any issues with him not being crate trained?

TheStirrer · 24/09/2022 12:47

Well we have had a difficult few days with Des.
unfortunately despite my best efforts he managed to scoff a fruit from our cornus tree and has had vomiting and diarrhoea which has not been fun for him or us. Yesterday he felt very sorry for himself but seems to be much perkier today thank goodness.
Vet told us to keep him on a bland diet of chicken, rice and egg and go in on Monday if he still isn’t right.

He usually sleeps in his crate downstairs but I let him sleep in his basket instead and i slept with him downstairs.
I am knackered as was up quite a lot but cheeky beggar would try and lie on my head as well!!!

Tomorrows job will involve sending hubby and don up the tree to get as many of the fruits off to prevent another D&V session….

Hope everyone else has a restful weekend with their pups.

Rowgtfc72 · 24/09/2022 15:36

Hello!
Can I join please?
We pick up our new pup in 2 weeks.
Mixture of excitement and dread.

Moonflowered · 24/09/2022 21:27

Here's Moonpup, who came home this morning. She was pretty quiet for most of the day but I think the drive home took it out of her.

She climbed into her crate and fell asleep about 8, which I'm taking as a win for now. But two questions about overnight...

  1. do you shut the crate at night? She's confined to the kitchen, which (we think) is dog proof.

  2. our garden is quite long and very dark - how do I not lose her when I take her for a wee in the night?! I have a slip lead which she'll wear without a fuss, but she sees it as a toy so I don't think she'll wee while she's wearing it. Is there an easier way? A playpen on the lawn??

Riverlee · 24/09/2022 21:37

Welcome @Rowgtfc72 and @Moonflowered

@Rowgtfc72 What sort of pup are you getting?

@Moonflowered we have a light on the back of our house that comes on when you go outside. Plus I carry a torch!

Riverlee · 24/09/2022 21:37

And MoonPup is gorgeous

Moonflowered · 24/09/2022 21:58

Thanks @Riverlee (I agree but I'm biased!)

She's a whippet so she could cover half the garden in the time it takes me to clock that she's made a run for it - that's my main worry for now.

BoxerPups · 24/09/2022 22:04

Hello,

Please may I join?

We picked up the first of our two boxer puppies today ( second one is coming from the same breeder but in a couple of weeks!)

So far all is quiet; Dora travelled home beautifully and is fast asleep in her crate... excited and nervous for this rollercoaster!

I know the rules... pup picture attached
