Our dog suddenly died this evening

Just so sad.

Our springer spaniel collapsed and died this evening as we were driving him to the beach for a walk. He had been absolutely fine all day and had no underlying health issues that we knew of.

It was so traumatic, he was travelling on the back seat when we heard a gasp and realised he was laying collapsed on his side. We pulled over immediately but he was completely floppy and losing colour.

Didn’t know how to do CPR so had to Google it, so didn’t start quickly or do it effectively. Nearest out of hours vets was half an hour away. So we lost him on the side of a main road.

He was the cuddliest and neediest dog you could imagine. He had been pawing at me for affection all day and I feel awful for telling him to stop. I wish we had just been able to hold him calmly, he didn’t deserve to go in such a panicked frenzy. We only lost his littermate in March, can’t believe we’ve lost him too. Just so shocked that this has happened - losing him with no warning, and the undignified way it happened.

How awful sending this love

Perpop · 25/07/2022 00:24

I’m so sorry, that’s heartbreaking. Sending love to you and your family. He sounds like a wonderful, loved part of the family ❤️

speak to the blue cross if you feel you need support too ❤️Blue cross

So sorry for your loss. I'm sure he knew he was loved. The day my dog died I was annoyed with her in the morning for peeing on the carpet. That's all I could think of after she died. But I loved her for nearly 16 years.

Featuredcreature · 25/07/2022 00:26

So sorry, how old was he? If it was so sudden and he immediately started losing colour it's very doubtful that anything could be done. I think even in humans the cpr success rate is very bad. What a shock, look after yourselves.

Ohmydayssilleople · 25/07/2022 00:27

As a doggie Mummy I actually cannot imagine how traumatic today has been 😢
I hope you are ok Xxx

BackAffYaSpookyBint · 25/07/2022 00:31

so sorry for your loss. how old was he? Its doubly hard to lose a friend when you're not expecting it. hugs x

LadyVictoriaSponge · 25/07/2022 00:37

I’m so sorry OP, not only are you grieving but you will be in shock. You may need extra support and it may help if you can speak to your vet to see if they can enlighten you on what caused his death and also maybe speak to a pet bereavement counsellor at the Blue Cross. Although the circumstances of his death were very traumatic, your dog will have been comforted that he was with you, he would have known you were trying to help him, he didn’t die alone, he was with you and that is all our beloved dogs want, to be with their family, he knew he was loved, I am so very sorry that you are going through such a traumatic time OP.

brainfogtakingover · 25/07/2022 00:38

I'm so sorry for your loss OP xx

RosieRoww · 25/07/2022 00:41

I'm sorry op, how old he was?

We lost our beloved dog last autumn, and there's no day day I wouldn't think about him, he was 15.

I always picturing him to be jolly, without pain and young again if that helps even a little .🌻🌻🌻🌻

Amecia · 25/07/2022 00:45

I'm so sorry. I lost my cocker spaniel suddenly when out for a walk when I was a kid. He just collapsed. I still remember it vividly 20 years later so I know how horrible it is. I think the vet did find an underlying health issue in the end like cancer (my memory fails me) even though he was a young dog. Just know at least you were there with him at the end to comfort him and he wasn't alone 💐

ErrolTheDragon · 25/07/2022 00:47

I'm so sorry OP.Flowers Our first dog died suddenly, it's an awful shock. Perhaps in some ways it's easier on the dog than becoming ill and infirm (we've recently had to PTS our second dog who was 16).

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 25/07/2022 00:52

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my beautiful girl last year, the Ralph Site on FB was an outlet for me to come to terms with what had happened. Sending you healing thoughts x

Bagpuss2022 · 25/07/2022 00:57

So sorry for your loss it’s awful thing but he had you with him and he would of known that sadly when there time comes like ours it’s not always sweetness and roses but he knew he was loved you were taking him to a beautiful place and he’s not with his littermate

WildImaginings · 25/07/2022 00:59

💗

GodspeedJune · 25/07/2022 01:00

Thank you all.

He had just turned 13, so an older dog but still fit and no medical issues we were aware of.

His name was Finn. He was the black and white. His brother the liver and white, was called Sam.

Can’t believe I’m talking about him in the past tense. We would have spoilt him rotten if we had any idea this was going to happen today.

I'm so sorry.
At least you were with him in the end, I'm sure you did everything you could.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 25/07/2022 01:06

Finn and Sam are very loved, they would've felt that at the end no matter the circumstances. You couldn't possibly have known what was going to happen, it happened the way it did because it was meant to be that way.

caringcarer · 25/07/2022 01:08

Lovely looking dogs. He probably missed his litter mate. I know it must be a terrible shock but a quick death is much less stressful for the dog than a painful drawn out illness. You were with him and I am sure he knew he was loved. Take care of yourself as it must have been a terrible shock for you.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 25/07/2022 01:12

I'm so sorry for your loss. If anyone in your life comments that he was 'Just a' anything, cut them from your life. You lost a family member today, you are allowed to be sad. Thinking of you, at one point I hope you can remember him and smile, but it is absolutely appropriate to cry right now. Sleep tight Finn xx

Fatarseflanagan09 · 25/07/2022 01:14

So sorry for your loss, when I had my boy pts I was inconsolable, it’s horrible and hard to come to terms with, be easy on yourself, I found a few websites that helped enormously, just speaking to others in the same position really helps.

JePréfèreLesChiens · 25/07/2022 01:24

I’m so sorry. He was gorgeous, as was his brother.

You were with him til the end. ❤️ And he was on his way to the beach for a walk, he’d have been thinking about that and if he liked the beach half as much as my two do, he’d have been having happy thoughts.

Again, I’m just so sorry this has happened. Sometimes, there just aren’t any words that seem enough. Take care. x

LadyVictoriaSponge · 25/07/2022 01:28

Those pictures are so lovely, look at those neckerchiefs! What smart boys! You can tell they were and are so loved, and they knew that OP.

shiningstar2 · 25/07/2022 01:32

KosherDill · 25/07/2022 01:33
