How to introduce a kitten to the household?

My dog grew up with a cat... but the cat was here first and it took a long while before she was happy to get as much as a whiff of the dog. However eventually they were rather fond of each other :) Sadly we lost the cat nearly 6 months ago to cancer, and there is no doubt our dog misses her . She's tried to make friends with the stray that has semi moved in but he beats her up!
I dearly miss having a full time cat, and would like to get a kitten (rescue preferably) so that it will accept our dog and hopefully be friends. I'm keeping my ears out for a 'needs a home' kitten, but wondered if anyone has any advice on how to introduce.. I suspect our dog will be rather enthusiastic !

The cat will need to feel safe, so spaces where it can be away from the dog are essential. Is it possible to put up a stair gate so the cat either has a safe room, or can get away from the dog by going upstairs. I would try to keep them completely separate for a few days while the cat gets used to its new environment and new humans, then allow the cat to have access but on its own terms!

Thank you :) So pretty much the same as for an adult cat.
I have had kittens before (many years ago ) and had them in one room for a few days and then gradually extended their access as they got used to us and their new home..but we didn't have a cat loving but large dog then and I don't want to the kitten to be scared of the large , hairy but friendly beast of a dog Smile I'm 99% sure my dog will want to mother a kitten which will be nice...ONCE the kitten has the upper paw!!

Our dog has always lived with cats but we got a kitten when he was two.

We actually took him with us in the car to collect the kitten (who had been raised with dogs) and they had a good sniff of each other. Kitten was then brought into the house in my arms and we introduced him to the other cats.

He has his own space overnight and when we were out, but otherwise if we were home, all the animals were together.

Dog and kitten (who is now two) are best friends and they have an amazingly gentle, close relationship 🥰

Maybe need to go for a more confident natured kitten, as I've found kittens often seem to lack sense of danger and come towards dogs even if may want to may chase them.

My local cat rescue pages on facebook are really busy with kittens and older cats which they test to see if can live with dogs/cats/kids. My lurcher wasn't cat friendly but a stray cat decided they must become friends which freaked the dog out.
