Are there any vets/vet nurses out there who could recommend a probiotic for our dog? She has had a nasty tummy bug and I wanted to get a good quality probiotic to help her recover. Thank you x

Purina proplan fortiflora is the one most vets use.

Not a professional but have much experience of pups with very violent tums - I use Pro-Kolin (paste) in the short term, and also use Pooch and Mut pre and probiotic powder as a meal supplement.

To settle I would try mashed sweet potato, scrambled egg and bland boiled chicken - our vet recommends against white/plain rice as it cause cause blood sugar spikes apparently... hopefully your pup recovers soon!

I use pro-kolin after a bout of diarrhoea it is quite strong and works really well. I use fortiflora which is a bit more gentle if I think there might be a problem- so if he goes swimming and drinks a lot of pond water- after the beach or if I see him eat something particularly nasty and I can’t get him to drop it (very rare).
every so often I feed natural live goats yogurt- a tub lasts three days when opened so he gets 6 meals with a spoonful of that- he loves it.

I just give a spoon of natural yogurt.

We just bought pro max from our vet today. It’s available on Amazon for £20 but if you need it urgently call you vet and ask to buy it. We didn’t need to pay for consultation as dog didn’t need to be seen. We’ve used it before and it’s great.

My vet recommends Canikur. It was our saviour when we rescued a pup that had Campylobacter that couldn’t maintain, let alone gain weight. Sorted him overnight. Also has the advantage of being palatable, so they will literally lick it off the syringe as it’s dispensed.

We used to get it from the vets, but you can buy it from Amazon.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. She had to stay in for fluids but I’m really hoping that she will get home to us today. I’ll ask about the pro Kalin for discharge and then get one of the longer term suggestions for future. Poor girl has been quite poorly and we are all missing her terribly.

I always have some promax paste tubes in the cupboard that I buy online as cheaper than from vet. I get nine from viovet.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 23/07/2022 14:31

mine not nine!
