Which dog toilet? First time pup owner **Cute Puppy Photo**

Hi MN,
Our puppy is arriving next week and we are beyond excited! I'm flapping a bit as we have just moved house and the garden is completely paved over and horrible. I am having it redone so it's got more soil, grass etc but in the meantime I'm hoping to toilet train the puppy obviously. I understand they naturally 'go' on grass but we don't have any yet! I was looking at the various puppy toilet options like Piddle Patch, PetLoo, etc but it's so hard to know if these are any good or a waste of money. Also they're quite expensive so I'd rather not make a pricey mistake!
Any advice much appreciated. Photo naturally included!

I would just get some turf or dirt or sand from somewhere. Nothing posh. Then use it as compost once you have re-landscaped.

My 2 yo pup still poos on the doorstep if it's raining....

i wasted two hundred quid on a fancy outdoor toilet. What id suggest is you just buy a section of artificial grass and stick it down on the ground! It will get smelly etc but there are washes for it and then you can just easily replace it if you need to before the garden works done.

pppuuuupppppyyyyyy

Perple · 17/07/2022 12:49

(you do need to watch out for the temperature of artificial grass in the heat)

If youve got slabs is it possible to quickly lift a couple and put some sand/dirt/gravel down. You might find pup is happy to go on the slabs anyway. My pup would choose grass if available but if there wasn't the option would go on a hard surface. I wouldn't waste money on a dog toilet personally.

Adorable pup! 😘

We only have slabs, will pup be used to going outside?
our breeder couldn’t let pups out due to foxes so they were used to going on artificial grass but we didn’t t have an issue just having slabs in the garden

just be aware dog pee kills grass so you may end up with a very patchy lawn

Gorgeous puppy!!! What is he?

Itsbackagain · 17/07/2022 13:15

We don't have any grass just chip stones and paving - there is an area with soil for drainage.purposes but dogs never go there. We used to have grass but the horrors ruined it. You're overthinking for all the eight reasons but pup will pee and poo anywhere - you don't need anything special!

I moved to a house with a larged paved area with my old dog and a grassed area at the end. The grassed end was fenced off.

He toileted fine on the slabs but I did catch him reversing up onto a planter to go in that. He would also expertly poo on a single leaf. He was hilarious!

PieonaBarm · 17/07/2022 14:08

When we got our boy we only had a paved back yard. Went no issues and toilet training him was fine. Never really thought about it but since we moved and got a lawn he never poos on the patio, always on the grass!

Pup will go wherever. Don't overthink it and just enjoy puppy!

Floralnomad · 17/07/2022 14:12

Our dog was toilet trained on the patio as we had to fence it off after having him for a week as he dug up and chewed a daffodil bulb and nearly died . They are perfectly ok to go on slabs .

Cuddliesrule · 17/07/2022 17:14

Ok thank you all I will stop overthinking!! Unfortunately the garden is totally paved (see photo). Will just get some fake grass or something and hopefully he will get used to going in a particular area.
He's an Australian labradoodle for those asking. The breeder has a garden with grass etc plus a paved area, there was poo in both 😀 so I don't think there is a precedent either way.
Will post more pics once he's in situ Smile

Just buy one roll of proper grass. Lift up a couple of slabs furthest from house and put grass down and water it. Dog can go there. Can be replaced every few weeks.

Cuddliesrule · 18/07/2022 15:57

Thank you @caringcarer that's good advice
