Cross breed breeders

So after hours and hours and hours looking at rescue websites I have given up. We would prefer to rescue a mongrel, but finding a dog that can be homed with kids and be an only dog etc is impossible.

How would you go about finding a breeder of for example a bedlington Whippet or lurcher? I grew up with a Bedlington lurcher and she was amazing. Kennel club has pure breeds but not cross from what I can see and I would want someone reputable .

I'd join a few lurcher pages on FB. You might even find there's a Bedlington whippet page. From there, you could get to know people who breed them.

A lot of lurchers come into specialist rescue, some from coursing busts. That might be another option, rather than standard rescues.

Lurchers are ten a penny in rescues.

Have you looked at some of the specialist greyhound rescues? They often take lurchers too.

if you pass an owner who has a dog you like (without being creepy, and be mindful that some can be a bit twitch because of dog thefts) you can ask where they got their dog. I get asked from time to time who my dogs breeder was
Champ dogs is good. Just apply a bit of common sense

MrsSteveHarrington · 17/07/2022 09:35

Good idea bout passing people although every dog round here is a cockapoo!

There are lots of rescue lurchers but they seem to need homing with another dog or have separation issues or can’t be homes with kids etc etc etc

We were looking for a golden retriever preference was for a working breed, so we looked on Champ dogs. It was during covid so huge waiting lists. One of the breeders I spoke to was breeding her golden retriever with a lab (both working breeds) as assistance dogs and asked if we were interested. It wasn't our original plan but when we saw the puppies we instantly fell in love. Our dog is the smartest, loveliest, prettiest girl you can imagine. So, yes have a look through champ dogs because they may also be breeding cross breeds. Once people had sussed me out they were happy to put me in touch with other breeders.

Side note, I wouldn't class a cross breed as a mongrel because it has come from two carefully bred parents so you are not getting the very varied genetic make up/ broad gene pool you would from a mongrel.

MrsSteveHarrington · 17/07/2022 12:33

Yes I know what you are saying about cross bread vs mongrel. Love a Heinz 57 type dog but there seem to be a lot less around than when I was young .

Visit a game / country fair, blood sports aren't for me but you will see so many lurchers i bet you will get some contacts from there .

Lurcher Link has this girl Lilith in, but I've not checked through others currently have for child friendly. Although does depend how young your children are & if dog savvy which maybe suitable.
LL home all over mainland UK and will help set up transport run if not local to where the dog is. They are more flexible with homing requirements than many rescues if they have the right dog for that home. I know they are currently swamped with requests for help from people wanting to relinquish their dogs so be worth contacting them as may have something suitable in the pipeline but isn't listed yet.

There's quite a few sighthound specific rescues that home nationally and some all breed rescues that get a lot of lurchers in including puppies perhaps due to location.

Facebook groups that share rescues posts save you having to trawl and can help people to find dogs that maybe suitable to individuals situation.

Sighthound-helpline UK

Sighthound rehoming UK .

If kids are 5+ then Galgos Del Sol have lot of youngsters & pups, mainly galgo or podenco types but has some mixed breeds too. One of better foreign rescues & work with UK based rescue for back up.
