... we will get a standard poodle.

I'm 34. I've wanted a dog since I was 5. Desperately so. After a huge amount of discussion DH thinks this is the right breed for us. But our children aren't yet 4 and 2. We need to wait.

The waiting is right. But I'm so excited. Just thought I'd share

Standard poodles are lovely dogs. Enjoy the anticipation.

Thank you. It feels a very long time!!

Sit is a very long time.

Do you always allow your DH to dictate what's happening?

ShirleyPhallus · 13/07/2022 22:40

This won’t go down well with MN but we got our poodle cross when DD was 18 months old and she’s been utterly perfect. The only issue was toilet training- carrying a puppy outside when the toddler was a bit unsteady on her feet meant we had our hands full but they’re absolute best of friends. If you have “sensible” toddler / child it could work. Plenty of people do it and it’s fine

DueyCheatemAndHow · 13/07/2022 22:45

@WinterMusings no we compromise. But thanks for asking.

@ShirleyPhallus waaah I was hoping no one would say that!!

We waited before getting our DDog and I'm glad I did. Now the DC are older I can devote more time to DDog and the DC love having her Wink

DueyCheatemAndHow · 13/07/2022 22:58

@PritiPatelsMaker that's good to hear. Can I ask how old your DC were?

He's not dictating, ffs. Why do some people on here always seem to find a way to husband bash?!

OP and her DH are being very sensible and deciding to wait until their DC are a bit older before getting a standard poodle puppy - they're big dogs!

PritiPatelsMaker · 14/07/2022 07:57

I planned to get one when the youngest was 7 but with things like redundancy and all the usual stuff you get thrown at you she was actually 14.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 14/07/2022 08:37

@coffeecupsandfairylights I know, God knows how both DH and I managed to get slagged off for that one!

A standard is a compromise. I'd have a miniature. But if it means DH is fully on board and up for it then that's great.

Ahh I could have written this message 5 years ago. I have a toy poodle now and they are a delight - absolutely worth the wait @DueyCheatemAndHow here the dc were 8 & 12

AgnesNaismith · 14/07/2022 08:42

You could always get to know 2 KC breeders and visit both toy and standard puppies ahead of your expected litter - so you can both make sure you’re making the right choice?

Cameronnorrieisabitofalright · 14/07/2022 08:45

My youngest was a year when we got ddog 1...under the most careful supervision a wonderful relationship developed....
We had 3 ddogs when another dc came along. He declares 2 his bff's!

DueyCheatemAndHow · 14/07/2022 08:53

@AgnesNaismith that's exactly my plan. There are 2 KC registered breeders so I reckon I'll wait a year and then contact them. We want a girl - not bothered about colour - but we really want ro get it right

I love standard poodles. Beautiful dogs.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 14/07/2022 09:07

Aren't they? Can't believe I hadn't really considered them before now. I need to do more research about breeding matters. I know a decent amount about breeds but not much about inbreeding coefficients, what to ask about health testing, how much of a working strain should I avoid etc etc.

It sounds like you will definitely get it right😊

Our poodle reminds me of Nana from Peter Pan, she’s quite sensible and looks after the children well!

MN is bonkers about criticising husbands sometimes 🤣

Lucky you!

We have a miniature poodle. She's wonderful. So clever and so loving.
