Puppy is swallowing chews

My 16 week old lab obviously loves to chew but only gets halfway through a chew (lamb plaits, beef strips, etc) before swallowing it. I’m now getting paranoid about giving him
natural chews as he’s so greedy he can’t wait to gobble them down. Any ideas?

Stuffed kong
Big raw meaty bone?

My beagle does the same and tbh it's never been an issue.

But you could give him stuffed kongs, stuffed hooves or lick-mats instead if you're worried or want them to last him a bit longer.

It can be a mega issue and cause major blockages . If your dog is gulping down and not chewing I would not give them the chews.

I also would not give a 16 week old lab a licki mat as they will probably chew that and again blockage is a big concern.

Try scatter feeding food or kong wobbler

If you have a Kong or similar you can freeze the braid or whatever into some wet food. It should mean by the time it's unfrozen enough to get out the rest has been chewed away and it's not a size that will cause a problem. Although in this weather maybe not!

My lab has had lickimats since 8 weeks old and has never shown any inclination to chew them.

She loves the ostrich bones you can get from JR products if you want something big for her to chew on which she won't be in danger of swallowing.

Thanks for the advice everyone! He has a lickimat and doesn’t chew it. He also has a kong which he loves although spends most of his time bouncing it rather than licking it. The ostrich bone sounds like a good idea :)

Look at the ostrich dino bones. Maybe give for 15/20 minutes at a time
