2 days running fucking off lead dogs harassing my 2.

If your dog has zero or unreliable recall then don’t let it off lead.

Loving the assumption that nervous/reactive dogs are that way because their owners didn't socialise them properly, when plenty were made that way by the actions of 'friendly' off-lead dogs who are anything but. Anybody who has ever had cause to shout "oh don't worry, he's friendly" needs to take a long hard look at their actions and their dog's behaviour.

Having read through the whole thread I think it really does bear repeating, yet again, once more for the people in the back: if your dog has good recall and you don't allow it to run up to other people or dogs uninvited, this thread and any calls for draconian leash laws really are not about you.

Exactly. Off lead dogs absolutely terrorised my rescue who ended up too nervous to leave the house.

If your dog is nervous, please use a yellow lead to indicate to people you have a nervous dog.

I do, it literally says NERVOUS in big black letters on it too. Some owners are still too fucking stupid to understand what it means though it seems.

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 15/07/2022 20:45

No one apart from those who already use yellow nervous leads pay attention to it.

Years ago, I had a poodle cross who did not like other dogs but we she was very well trained and could be let off her lead.

A man let his Labrador come over and annoy her. I warned him she wasn’t friendly and he said “ah, maybe she can teach him some manners”

Well, she did her usual warning snap. Didn’t hurt the lab at all. When he realised I was being serious, he rapidly put his dog on its lead and walked off.

stillherenow · 15/07/2022 21:22

A friend of mine wears a bright orange !no dogs' tabard herself, she says it's the only thing that makes the numnuts pay attention

I'm weighing it up as an option....

SarahSissions · 15/07/2022 22:20

I have a “no dogs, dangerous’ flash on my lead for when I don’t want to be bothered. My dog is ridiculously friendly, and people who know us think it’s hysterical, but I am trying to teach my dog to ignore other dogs and I find the “I am friendly” brigade don’t give a shit if your dog is nervous- but they do pay attention if they think their dog will get hurt. I don’t want my dog to be unable to be off lead, but I need to overcome his interest in other dogs, and dogs barrelling up to him during a walk reinforces that every dog is a playmate and sets my training back

Fabboush · 16/07/2022 07:44

'If your dog is nervous, please use a yellow lead to indicate to people you have a nervous dog'

I do. I usually get 'Aw is she scared' and I reply 'no, I couldn't find one with 'twat' on'

Velvian · 16/07/2022 07:47

It is an absolute nightmare where I am. Even walking along the pavement is now off limits. There are a few absolute dicks of dog owners that walk their dogs off lead along the pavements, next to the road.

Where exactly can you walk if you don't want to be bothered by off lead dogs? Not on the pavement not along footpaths with signs saying 'keep dogs on leads'

No one seems to even understand what recall is, never mind practicing it. My rescue dog can never be off lead. She was terrified of other dogs when she first came to us, she has got so much better through training. Everytime an out of control dog comes running up to her and won't leave her alone (twice this week), it sets her back.

CanaryShoulderedThorn · 17/07/2022 10:22

Our dog has great recall but he's a tiny 14yr old lhasa apso that was attacked by a bulldog years ago and though he's fully recovered I'm not sure I have. We keep him on lead unless he's on his local patch.
We were walking him, late evening, on the cliffs at Bude last week and had stopped to sit on a bench. A woman with 2 bouncy uncontrolled dogs appeared and the largest (big white, bulldog x dalmation) promptly pounced on our dog, snarling and snapping.
Older lady Owner starts flapping and screaming at her dog. My teen son (possibly stupidly) scooped our dog up, then her dog was snapping at my son. She hit it with its heavy chain lead and it ran off.........only to chase a little girl (aged 6ish) and knocked her to the floor. Whilst mauling and snapping at her.
Absolutely shit behaviour from that owner and if I'd been that child's parents I'd have rang the Police.

2ndMrsdeWinter · 17/07/2022 21:41

I don’t care whether a dog is on or off a lead. What I DO care about is when dogs come
running over to my dog, sniffing and getting in his space. It freaks him out and makes him reactive. If your dog is off lead and has poor recall, put him on a lead when you approach a dog already on a lead. Not sure why it’s such a challenging concept.

If you google neon dog uk you can buy them there. I have various bibs and lead attachments .At 38 kilo the other dog will come off far worse due to my dogs breed and size if an off leash dog barrels him. I've lost count of the dogs he warned.

My boys 35kg. He’s a gentle soul but could absolutely do damage if provoked.

Makes my blood boil. My dog was crouching for a wee and a black dog literally ran at her and startled her. She reacted, unsurprisingly, but her owner was worse. He shouted in my face that he would break my fucking dog's neck, if she tried that again. Bad mannered dogs are owned by bad mannered people.

SarahSissions · 20/07/2022 18:18

My boy is big as well. I find telling him “gentle, I know it looks just like a chew toy” means owners reclaim their dogs quite quickly.
I also carry a pet corrector spray- I introduced my dog to it with lots of treats and he thinks it’s the best thing, but it frightens off most other dogs with a puff of air

That’s awful. What the fuck is wrong with people.

@SarahSissions You sound like me!
I'm working so hard on getting my dog to ignore others, (she loves them all!) yet the amount of idiots who let their dogs bug her whilst she's on lead is unbelievable!

You'd have to go out of your way. I moved to to rural nowhere and have a nature reserve to walk him on. Have to be on lead for sheep and very very few other people. 9 times out of 10 I don't see another souls.

Down side is he's forgotten about dealing with other dogs as we get so little practice. As he's on lead though I just ask him to sit and wait by me if need be. He's usually fine until they've gone past!

It's hard though. People are idiots.

Sitdowncupoftea · 21/07/2022 09:27

@MsMarvellous I live rural. The problem is even though the walk I do is permissive to locals only, we get the professional dog walking brigade 🙄. There's one that walks 7 off lead dogs the land owners chased her off a few times. No dogs are suppose to be off leash especially around livestock. You get the off leash numpties rural just as much.

MsMarvellous · 21/07/2022 09:29

@Sitdowncupoftea that's just ridiculous. There's really no helping some people is there!

Konfetka · 21/07/2022 09:35

Dog Walking 101:
If you see a dog approaching on a lead, put your own dog on the lead.
The whys and wherefores are irrelevant; it's simple dog-owning etiquette.

No I now have neon dog clips on my lead. I shout recall your dog. Then if the dog barrels my dog it gets a nip. It's the dog walkers fault. I have my mobile set to record just incase it ends up worse. I won't muzzle my dog as he needs a fair chance just in case the other dog is running over to attack him. I enjoy my walks my dogs under control as he's on a lead and a longline if no ones about. I report the dig walkers to the council.
