Anyone keep working dogs in outside kennels?

Our neighbour has dog kennels for his working dogs just the other side of our dividing fence.

I'm not a dog owner, and accept that dogs can smell to some degree, but the stench wafting over the fence today is unbearable. I do appreciate the heat perhaps isn't helping, but just wondered if anyone keeps working dogs or has experience of this and what level of smell is reasonable?!!

I'm obviously not watching all the time, but I rarely see the kennel enclosed 'sleep' part get cleaned or the bedding taken out to be aired and feel it's perhaps this causing the worst of the smell rather than the dogs themselves.

I want to say something but want to know what's reasonable as i know nothing about keeping dogs, let alone working dogs in kennels.

All dog stuff will smell if it's not cleaned - my dogs' bedding gets washed once a week and he has to be dry before he's allowed on carpets and soft furnishings.

If I leave his stuff any longer than a week, it definitely has a distinct "doggy" smell and I can't imagine it being very pleasant if I left it any longer, especially in this heat.

Outdoor kennels should really be cleaned regularly.

Indoor pet dogs only... but, I rarely wash beds, if I look at them one day and notice they’re dirty or if somethings happened that means they suddenly need washed, and yeah they do smell like dog, but definitely not anything that could be smelled over a fence.

if it’s strong I’d assume they’re toileting in there tbh.

Until my husband and I separated my dogs were kept in kennels but only while we weee out of the house and again at night (they're very old ladies with arthritis now and live with me in the house and not outside). I used duvets for bedding and took the cover off every few weeks to wash. However even when it was time to wash the covers I can honestly say there wasn't much of a smell and certainly not to ge smelt by next door neighbours - it was only when I got my nose right inside the kennel

If I were in your position I'd call the RSPCA for advice. Tell them your concerns and they might pop their heads into your neighbour just to make sure the dogs are ok.

Animals can't speak for themselves and depend on caring people to do it for them. If the RSPCA are happy then all well and good and it'll put your mind at rest

I agree with pp, l would call the RSPCA. It shouldn't be smelling that much. I think something is wrong. You sound like a very caring person, please call them.

Our friends have around a dozen working dogs in kennels. No smell at all.
