Picking up dog poo in long grass.

SurreyHillsinspring · 09/07/2022 07:42

DW and I were walking on a grassy path on Common land ,one side a forest the other long grass surrounded by rolling fields.Old dog does his business a couple of metres into the long grass. We start having a convo about picking it up ,the wife insisting yes, I'm saying no.

Out of nowhere a bloke in his seventies shouts from a fair distance to pick it up.I picked it up after a long interlude.

I'm not saying what happened next but we went straight home both annoyed.

Who was in the wrong?

You're the only one in the wrong

mizzo · 09/07/2022 07:45

Pick it up

SurreyHillsinspring · 09/07/2022 07:52

It's long grass that is never cut stretching a couple of acres.Ive always been unsure about the law with this. But will of course pick it up now.

I just wondered how it effects the wildlife also.Is it just the right thing to do or is it the law.My dog keeps eating horse poo also ,but only the fresh ones not aged.

Whats horse poo got to do with it?

Pick up after your dog.

Skyeheather · 09/07/2022 08:00

Pick it up - my kids love running through the long grass at the sides, I don't want to be scrubbing your dog poo off their shoes 🤢

Pick it up. I can't use the first 10 foot of my hay field because lovely dog walkers allow their pets off lead on the footpath and to run in the long grass. They never pick it up and it is disgusting.

mizzo · 09/07/2022 08:04

Honestly, it's incredibly simple.
If you have a dog you pick up and throw away its poo.
If you have a problem with doing that then don't get a dog.

I love dogs but their poo disgusts me and makes me heave so I don't have a dog.

Alwaystheplusone · 09/07/2022 08:04

How have you even posted this as a question? Pick it up ffs

SurreyHillsinspring · 09/07/2022 08:05

Yea sorry its a thread about poo,it's just I'm about to take my puppy there off the lead but thinking can't because he eats so much of it.

Horses eat a plant/oat based diet none of which will cause your dog any harm.
You should be more worried about him eating poo from meat eating animals such as foxes and other dogs.

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/07/2022 08:08

Puppies will eat anything, mine used to eat sheep and cat poop.

Rainallnight · 09/07/2022 08:11

Jesus, pick it up. What would a dog owner even ask this question. No wonder so many of our public spaces are so disgusting.

rnsaslkih · 09/07/2022 08:12

Sounds like the grass was the edge of the field. a field that could be crops soon. You need to pick that up. You say it’s never cut, but perhaps that’s planned and when someone comes cutting they’ll have shit all over the blades. There aren’t many excuses for not picking up dog shit.

rnsaslkih · 09/07/2022 08:13

If your dog eats animal shit, it may mean the diet is low quality or lacking in something. Not necessarily. But make sure the food is high quality.

I thought this, but horse poo is dangerous for dogs to eat if the horses have just been wormed or had other medications.

I'm not saying what happened next - why not? Intriguing!

Is this your first dog, if they’re a puppy? You need to watch them and train them a ‘leave it’ command for the poo eating. Take higher value than dog poo delicious treats. It’ll take time, you need to be both vigilant and persistent.

Dog poo, long grass, pick it up. You say it’s ‘never cut’ but actually lots of long grassy fields are actually cut for hay at the right time of year and dog poo everywhere from people who think it doesn’t count, somehow, ruins the whole crop.

Soubriquet · 09/07/2022 08:22

Pick it up!

Its a pain when it’s in long grass and I end up pulling the grass up around the poo to make sure I get it all but still pick it up

Ok thanks.
There's no excuses I'll pick it up.Thanks for advice we've been constantly stressed on walks about this.He loves pink lady apples and carrots ill take plenty today.

OP posts:
NoSquirrels · 09/07/2022 08:41

Not sure apples and carrots are going to tempt away from stinky poo, tbh. You need sausages/hot dogs/cat food/cheese - something higher value than the poo, which he currently thinks is amazing.

Don’t forget it’s a long haul training, so if you don’t get instant results keep going.

DorchaAndLouis · 09/07/2022 08:44

Dog poo should be picked up even in remote areas unlikely to be walked on because it can damage the ecosystem by over fertilising the soil. Wild flowers and plants (essential for insects and birds) need low fertility soil.
