My dog's been bitten by a tick!

They absolutely love her, she's always getting them, but this time we're on holiday in the New Forest - I'm so afraid it's a deer tick and shell get Lyme disease! the area is red and swollen to maybe the size of a 50p coin. It's bleeding and there's no tick to be seen, just the puncture wound. I've only known her to have one other reaction as dramatic as that, but that was from an ordinary sheep tick. Does anyone know if a nasty initial reaction is linked with the risk of Lyme disease or is it 50/50 that they can have one without the other? We've bathed it in saline and she'll see a vet tomorrow if it's still looking dodgy. She's fine in herself.

Are you sure it was a tick? Sounds like a horse fly but difficult to know without seeing it.
lyme disease is rare, so worth being aware of, but don’t blow it out of proportion.
I don’t treat for fleas and ticks all year, but do in the summer because we are quite rural- maybe ask the vet if you can have something just to last you through the summer months

Doesn’t sound like a tick bite, they don’t tend to leave a bleeding wound

My dog gets bitten by lots of ticks but what you are describing doesn't sound like a normal tick bite.

As others have said could it have been something else that bit and has caused a reaction?

Newfluff · 08/07/2022 09:18

Did you remove the tick? They don't bite and drop off immediately, they feed off them for a few days.

What flea treatment are you using?

Doesn't sound like a tick or a horsefly. Neither leave a bloody wound.
