Yakk chews

Just read on another thread that a dog behaviourist had told a poster that yakk chews were like MDMA for dogs. They just sit in the stomach and give them a huge energy boost. Has anyone found this to be true? Just bought one to try with my 7 month lab who needs a long lasting chew to keep him busy but definitely doesn't need more energy.

I haven’t found that. In fact, all the hard chewing tends to tire mine out. But it’s been a while since he had one, I’ll pay more attention next time.

Thanks for that. The thought of MORE energy was panicking me a bit. He's lovely but very full on. Not as chilled as other labs we've had.
We tried reindeer antler but he's not impressed. Cows tails he loves but are stinky. Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Never noticed that at all. I'd say that behaviourist was talking rubbish.

No never seen a difference. They are compressed yak milk.

Really? Never heard of that. Chewing is calming I thought

Dunno - my dog was not remotely interested in finding out !

coffeecupsandfairylights · 05/07/2022 16:31

Nope, not at all.

Mine is shattered after a good chew!

Massiveaggressive · 05/07/2022 16:42

Have you tried deer antlers (not split ones as I’ve found they can shatter) They last a good month…

Floralnomad · 05/07/2022 16:53

I don’t find that at all , but I also don’t find them long lasting our patterdale x ( 16kg) eats a large Yak chew in one sitting .

Meceme · 05/07/2022 18:57

Thanks everyone. I'll try it out and let you know how we get on.

Well we tried the yakk chews last night. Two hours of chewing with great concentration followed by a very sleepy puppy. Win all round and still loads of chew left for another time.

Haven't noticed that either - and most dogs are probably not going to get loads of it during in their stomach, are they? Maybe he was meaning other softer chews. My dog likes them but demolishes them too quickly these days. He loves buffalo horns, takes days to make any impression on them!
