Just a warning to anyone out there who are currently looking to adopt a dog from rescue…..
Obviously many of these dogs have had a tough start, maybe abused or malnourished. Often their history is unknown but they and their owners are living with the consequences.
We, as responsible owners got our dog seen by 2 behaviourists. Who both advised against it and said it would only have effect on his sexual behaviour( of which there was very little) but a disastrous effect on his confidence and make him much worse with other male dogs( which currently is only a small but manageable issue).
The rescue all along advocated for him to see, and for us to take, the behaviourist advice until now when the advice does not marry up with their castration policy. We have presented evidence and await what they decide but I would say buyer beware. It has taken us a year to get him settled but it was hard, hard, hard! Can not face the idea of all our work and patience being set back on our dog who many would have returned within a week. I know he is better off with us, he is settled but I feel so angry that their policy might override the dog’s welfare.
