Sunbathing dog

DDog loves sunbathing. LOVES it. He is dreadful in the heat with regards to walking, it's a struggle to get him around the block early morning or late at night but he just loves sitting in the sun.

When it gets really hot do you let your dogs sunbathe or bring them in? Inside he is very happy to sleep on the tiled kitchen floor. He's got a cool mat but won't entertain sitting on it.

He an elderly fair haired cairn so I'm worried about sun burn and heat stroke!

I've made him come in now but it was a battle...

My one will go out and lie in the sun for a few minutes, pant like a steamtrain and then take himself off to somewhere cooler. Loves chasing all the flies though Smile

Chuck a bucket of water over DDog to help cool down. It's much more instantaneous and easier to proactively monitor than trying to keep them in the shade!

We have one sunbather and one who hates the heat. One is under the corner table in the living room and the other is on the patio watching for cats. He’s just moved into the shade though so he’s being sensible. For once.

I used to have a real sunbather. But I also used to describe him as "my little hot dog" because in winter he would lie against or under the central heating! He couldn't get warm enough, ever. I let him be. As long as he has access to water and shade if he wants it, most dogs are sensible and know when to move.

Both mine love the sun but are quite good at going in the shade or coming on the kitchen floor to cool down, the white dog gets sun cream on though!

As it's both raining and windy here in east Scotland neither of them are moving off the sofa 😂

My stupid boy has just been brought in after I found him in full sun again. The back door was open . He just can't be trusted. I'm not letting him out again till this evening

Ddog1 is a black springer x patterdale and she does not do well in the sun! But she's 8 so old enough to self-regulate.

Ddog is a 13mth old dachshund and she is a sun worshipper! We do bring her in, but have also bought her some sunscreeen.

If your worried bring them in. I put a cold hose between the back legs to cool them down (only place it gets through the fur). Gums changing colour, fast breathing, glassy eyes all signs they are overheating.
you wont to them any harm bringing them in, but might leaving them out

My black shihtzu has mostly been indoors all day and slept. Back door is open and quite a nice cool breeze coming through. Not eaten anything but has drunk.

Mine's a mega hairy double coated Eurasier...
so I have blinds down, mini aircon going... and she still likes to pop outside and sunbathe, but comes in after about 10 minutes baking :)
Went out this morning a 6.30, and we were going to leave it til 9pm tonight but at 8pm she dragged her harness to DH..so he took the hint. Turns out she needed a poo (she won't go in the garden and prefers not to wee there either) So we went to the local meadows (weirdly at leat 5 degrees colder than everywhere else as it's boggy usually) , did her poo and marched us back home Grin
At 4pm on my way home from work, I passed at least 4 dogs being walked..on pavements :( My car read 33 degrees . Bloody awful owners!

Yesterday, temps were consistently 29-30c here after about 11am.

7am - It was already getting warm, car was showing 18 and it’s parked in a sheltered, West-facing spot. Went for an 1hr walk and a play on grass with ball & access to water.

No more walks throughout the day though as just too hot. Spent the hottest mid afternoon hours inside, sleeping on the coolest side of the house with the blinds down. Then when he was outside he played in his paddling pool (in the shade) and with the hose (loves the hose) and snoozed in the shade.

It’s back to raining again today so he’s happier Grin
